I wasn't the biggest fan back in the day, but my adult ears think differently. They're solid.

They are like Pearl Jam to me in that their first few albums were pretty good to great but fell off hard after that. I couldn't get into anything after Mellon Collie, though a few of their electronic songs are decent.

Smashing Pumpkins to you is like Deftones to me. Never really liked them for the longest time but for the past year or two, they have grown on me and now I love them.

Tool is the same way. Never really liked them until Fear Inoculum came out and now they're one of my favorites.

Admittedly I haven't done the deepest dive on their discography, so it's possible I will end up sharing sentiment.

I couldn't stand Billy's voice as a kid. But a switch flipped when I became an adult. I bought their Rotten Apples album and loved it. Then I got into all their other stuff through Adore and became a huge fan.

I highly recommend catching them live. I think their performances were not well received after they got back together in 2007 ish, up until James and Jimmy rejoined the band. I've seen them twice since then and both shows were very good. Billy seems like such a nice dude now, which is a big change from his younger self.

first album was on HEAVY rotation back while i lived in houston in the early 1990s. in fact i'm positive i lost a lot of my hearing to it.

agree they dropped off after mellon collie but 'bullet with butterfly wings' and 'the end is the beginning is the end' are both really solid.

(not sure which album either of those are from)

Respectively disagree but appreciate your insight. I like the way the band has evolved over time with it music. They can’t stay young forever.

I saw them live twice. Once was in ‘96 at the Lafayette Cajundome which was one of the worst shows I’ve seen sound wise, then I saw them a few months later at UNO Lakefront and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen to this day.
If I remember correctly, Filter’s drummer was filling in for those shows and did a really good job.

I was at that Cajundome show and man, you are right about how shitty the sound was.
Thing is, I saw them at Lollapalooza 94 and that was a great show. They were showing fight scenes from Enter The Dragon before they came out. And they sounded MASSIVE.

They have a big catalogue and much of it is good to great. Check out the compilation album Pisces Iscariot to get a sense of their full range when they were at their best.

I didn't take quite so long, but I really started to dig them in the late 2000s after dismissing them at first.

Siamese Dream ranks as one of the best albums of all time. Their sound is unique and tight and even his singing is good for what it is. I fought liking them in the 90s but eventually relented because they are simply great. I think they have more quality than Pearl Jam, honestly. Early Pearl Jam is great but they became the Grateful Dead after 2000 or so. At least Billy still wants to sound like himself, PJ tries as hard as they can to NOT sound like what made them popular.
