Last night I got to see them kickoff their tour in Glendale, AZ.
It was AMAZING! As a longtime SP fan...I was very pleased with this concert. Especially since they played my all time SP song Mayonaise.
Metric was the opening act. Not bad...but her mic needed to have the volume increased cause you couldn't hear her vocals over the band for much of their set.
If you get a chance...check out this tour, you will not be disappointed.
Here is the setlist...
Setlist:
Disarm
Rocket
Siva
Rhinoceros
Space Oddity (David Bowie cover)
Drown
Zero
The Everlasting Gaze
Stand Inside Your Love
Thirty-Three
Eye

For Martha
To Sheila
Mayonaise
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac cover)

I’m going in a few days. Glad to hear it was awesome. Do you know how long they played?
Posted on 7/13/18 at 8:57 am to SUB
It seemed like they played all night. I mean...their set list has 31 songs. I think they started playing a little after 8 pm and show ended right before 11:30.

Damn. Yeah I figured it was 2 plus hours. Setlist looks amazing. I can't wait!

You will enjoy it. That concert was like a huge thank you from SP to all their longtime fans.
I didn’t video it...but Porcelina of the Vast Oceans was amazing live.

How were your seats? I'm like 5th row in the upper deck on the side of the stage. Tickets were crazy $$$ so I didn't splurge, but I'm happy just to be there.

I was row G on the lower level(not floor) in a section (section 110 if you look up Gila River arena seating)to the right of the stage (if you are facing stage). I felt like I had pretty good seats imo.
Cost me $300 with all fees for 2 tickets.
I tried buying tickets the minute they went on sale. Closest floor seats I could get was 40 rows back. No thanks.
They didn’t sell out this concert at all. In fact, all the people that had bought the cheap seats way up high were upgraded for free to other lower empty seats. They completely closed off the higher level of the arena.

That's an awesome setlist. Hoping to go see them sometime this summer.

Their cover of Stairway to Heaven was really good as well.
I think a video of that was in the article I linked.

Damn, if only I could be so lucky. I don't think they sold out our arena either but I doubt this will happen.

Thanks for the review. I am seriously thinking of going to this Wednesday in Dallas. This is a great set list.

It’s over 3 hours of SP....you should go. If you are an SP fan....you will not want to miss this tour.
Every one of their songs sounded so much like the album version of it.
If I could afford it right now....I would travel to other cities to catch more shows of this tour it was that damn good.

Here is a really good article reviewing the concert....

Sitting in Gila River Arena, waiting for the Pumpkins’ Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour to kick off, I felt like I was about to meet an ex I still held a torch for. Would they be as good as I remembered? Would it be weird? Could their music still make me feel the way it did when I first heard them?
quote:
While waiting for the stage to transition from opener Metric’s setup to the Pumpkins’ stage, a friend of a friend swung by and said that the show was going to be three hours long. “The set list is like 30 songs,” he confided to us. On the one hand, that was shocking news: Three hours is venturing into Springsteen territory. That’s a goddamn marathon for any band to push through. But on the other hand, Corgan’s always been crazy generous to his fans. This is the guy who was dropping B-Side box sets and deep cut comps before Smashing Pumpkins Version 1.0 even broke up.
quote:
Time and time again over the course of three hours, the Pumpkins showed off their best side. It isn’t their “God is empty/just like me” rocker posturing; it’s their romanticism. How songs like “Muzzle” and “Hummer” seem to soar toward heaven, eager to transcend the bounds of everything else. It’s why metal groups like Deafheaven draw inspiration from records like Siamese Dream for their prettier moments: The Pumpkins knew how to merge overwhelming power and beauty better than anyone else in American alt-rock. They found a way to splice Jimmy Page and Robin Guthrie into one perfect six-string rock god. It’s why I thought of them the way I’d think of an ex. So much of their music is about yearning, about desire, about wanting someone or something so much and not being able to contain yourself. The kind of feelings that are the death of cool if you say them out loud.
quote:
Did Corgan and company faceplant a few times in Glendale? Yes. But for every embarrassment, there was a dozen triumphs. The three of them played together like old friends, cracking jokes and at ease in each other’s company. They even threw in a genuine curveball during their encore as Chamberlain picked up a mandolin and the band did a sweet, lilting cover of Alison Krauss’s “Baby Mine.” A moment of gentle bluegrass to cap off a night of gothic synth-pop and skyscraping guitars.
quote:
And if you’re wondering if I felt the way I did in San Francisco, if the magic with “my ex” is still there … Let’s just say I could feel a piece of me splinter and crack open when they started playing “Mayonaise.”

Smashing Pumpkins at Voodoo 2007 was utterly disappointing. Can anyone besides OP vouch that they have improved their live act, because I have a hard time believing that.

Read the numerous reviews of this show online. Watch the numerous videos posted on YouTube from last night’s show.
Also....this is the closest they are gonna get for a full SP reunion. You didn’t have all those original members in 2007. And....this is a headlining show inside in arenas. Not a performance at a music festival outside.
ETA: I saw SP in 2010(at a casino)....and even though it was basically Billy and his replacements....still put on a decent show. So maybe they just don’t do as well at outdoor venues?

That is a huge setlist. Nice to see so many classics. I know Billy hates playing them. Kinda wish they were coming here now.

Went to the Pumpkins/Manson co-headlining show a few years back at Champions Square and it was much different from the Voodoo performance. Corgan actually has fun and smiles now. I remember thinking how fricking miserable he looked at Voodoo and what a contrast it was to see a hit filled setlist with him enjoying it.
He’s also big into pro wrestling and just seems to all around be in a good place. He’s got a recent Tiny Desk NPR online that’s worth checking out as well.
