It currently has a 100 on Metacritic, which is something I never thought I would see.

I thought Holy Hell’s 90 and That’s the Spirit’s 88 were high.
I don’t know how Metacritic works though. Are these sites plugging in their own ratings or are users bringing these sites ratings over like it’s a Wikipedia? Guardian has the album at 4/5 for instance, and they’re frequently listed on Metacritic for other albums but not this one yet.

I’m not really sure how their formula works, because if you look at all the reviews listed, not all of them are in facts 100s.

The reviews I've seen say this is their best work since Iowa. I'll have to check it out. Haven't listened to them in a while.

Apparently, they are more respected than I thought. I always thought they were seen as kind of a joke. But I’m not much of metal guy and I guess I was wrong.

They are one of the biggest bands in metal and have sold millions of albums. Far from a joke.

you can't be serious lol and I don't even really care for slipknot. But to dismiss them as a joke is a bit absurd

Like I said I’m not a metal guy and apparently I am wrong. I never really thought of them as a joke, I just assumed that’s how they were perceived, at least by music critics. I guess because of the masks. Again, I appear to be wrong. I’ll leave this thread as to not derail it any further.

I'm not a huge SK fan by any stretch. I too think Iowa was their last "good" album.
For this one, a few of the guitar tracks were released ahead of time from the studio and I was blown away at the two songs I heard stripped down. The lead guitarist absolutely violated that guitar on both those tracks. Solid stuff.
I'll give this one a listen now with an open mind and hope for the best.

I agree
Always assumed they were looked down upon. I mean, from an outsider perspective they certainly come off as uber-douchey, but so do plenty of respected bands (Tool)

Ok, let's let them dominate the charts this and next month. Then we can get back to saying that about them. ha

I like Slipknot and I'd definitely say this album is their best since Iowa.

Both of these sound like Stone Sour albums.

Really? Grey chapter was hard as shite. I love it
I’ve been in a big Slipknot kick lately and have gained a lot of respect for them
They have their place. They have some really good musicians.
