Captain Jack

So you stand on the corner in your New English clothes
And you look so polished from your hair down to your toes
Ah but still your fingers gonna pick your nose
After all, .
Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'

Great lyrics about a time in his life when he would watch from his apartment window these rich kids buying drugs from the dealer on the street.

So many other great songs to choose from:
The Stranger
New York State of Mind
She’s Always a Woman to Me
Just the Way You Are

Billy Joel is one of the absolute best songwriters of his time.

but my favorite song (and verse) is from "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" The verse applies to anytime you make a change in your life and the acquaintances you leave behind.

There's an interview of Richard Marx, who is a big Joel fan as well, stating that same verse quote as being one of his favorites as well. He also covered "Miami 2017".

Also, for you Joel fans on here who missed out on the Broadway production of "Movin' Out", it was fantastic.

Saw it back in the Fall of 2005 in NYC, great show, and Michael Cavanaugh did a great job performing.

There's some lyrics in "Keeping the Faith" that have always stuck out to me as some of the most poetic/prophetic words ever put on paper:

quote:

You can get just so much
From a good thing
You can linger too long
In your dreams
Say goodbye to the
Oldies but goodies
'Cause the good ole days weren't
Always good
And tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems

Innocent Man is one of my favorite albums...a few years ago I was in NYC and got a picture of the steps from the cover.

New York State of Mind

Loved it when a Vanderbilt student came out of the audience to accompany him on it when he was here a few years ago.

My favorite Joel tune is Goodnight Saigon and the live version with the vets singing with him still gives me chills.

They counted the rotors and waited for us to arrive.....

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

I heard it was initially two or three different pieces. Phil Ramone told Joel that they can piece it together like Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End. Joel worried about the change in keys towards the end but Ramone told him he will have an orchestral piece cover the key changes... and it that's what it became.

'Laura' off Nylon Curtain is Joel's ode to Lennon in his vocal style. Love that song but my favorite Joel song is 'All For Leyna'

As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink called loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone"

Cool and clever lyrics. The "waitress" is his ex-wife #1 in real life, as you probably know it's an auto biographical song about a 6-month gig he had at a piano bar in LA in 1972. Early Billy Joel songs/albums never get old for me.

Any favorite songs or albums by him?

Summer, Highland Falls is one of my all-time favorites of his. I think the lyrics are masterful while also creating a feeling of nostalgia.

Yes, and the live Songs in the Attic version is much better than the studio version. Also, one of my favorite parts is the intro piano riff and the vocals.

Funny that you mention it. I was there in the Summer of 2019 and took a photo of the steps as wells, with me posing in the same position as the album. It's in Soho, 142 Mercer St. to be specific.

Oddly, it's his least selling album but more songs off that album are played live than any other album.

It's totally 2 different styles. The Stranger is more pop rock with a gospel type song at the end.

Piano Man is more folk/country oriented, not as pop as the Stranger. Love the combination of piano, acoustic guitars & banjo on that album.

Coincidentially he released an "official" video of that song today 09/30/21. Not sure why after all these years, probably a marketing strategy. Cool video tho.
