Roger Waters/Pink Floyd - The Wall

best band ever? i say yes... Was fortunate enough to see "floyd" in 94 in the dome and saw waters in dallas, tacoma, and houston for the wall tour.
is there a better band that stands the test of time? i don's think so.

I prefer David Gilmour and The Wall is not my favorite Floyd album, but they are my favorite band.
I don't think theres a better 3 album run than Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals. And if you add The Wall and Meddle their streak of albums in the 70s is goddamn impressive

I think the beatles appealed to a wider fan base but I love pink Floyd and have always considered them one of my favorites. I enjoy the wall a lot. I think I enjoy the persona of gilmour a lot more as he has always kind of portrayed the image of an appreciative performer happy to play pink Floyd songs whereas waters seemed essentially depressed for the last 40 years. But that is what kind of made waters the songwriter that he is obviously. Hard to pick which one I enjoy more to be honest

Pink Floyd is one of the GOATs but the Wall ranks far down their list of best albums.

Agreed. I think I'm just more of a Gilmour than a Waters fan.

I like Waters as a songwriter better but like Gilmour's voice better.

That is basically what The Wall is about, Waters building a "wall" around himself that ended up isolating him from everyone, including his bandmates. It was a very telling album of what was going through Waters' head at that time. That is why I rate The Wall as one of the best concept albums of all time.

Syd supposedly had real psychological problems that were made worse by constant LSD use (although Gilmour said that Syd would've eventually had the breakdown regardless, the LSD just sped it up).
Wish You Were Here was the album that was sort of a tribute to Syd. The Wall was Waters' expression of how the events of his life led to his building of the "wall" that he used to isolate himself.

I saw roger waters in Houston at the woodlands around 2000? Great show. Including his solo stuff. Love what he brought to Floyd
DG was the sound of Floyd. He's one of those guys that if you play guitar you hate. He makes the most simple riffs sound incredible. He created such a good tone. He would not overpower the guitar. His sustain, timing and incredible ear is why Floyd was successful.

Gilmour was definitely a major part in the direction of the music and sound of the group. The guy is one of the top guitarist of all time. And his song writing from a music and arrangement standpoint is underrated (mainly because of Waters' shadow when it came to lyrics and concepts). But his work on Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell proves that he could write songs.
Gilmour's (and the rest of the band's) mistake was allowing Waters' to write the majority of the songs. For years after Syd was left at home, their management kept trying to get someone in the band to take of the song writing portion of it. And they all kind of chipped in for the Meddle album. But then Waters ended up taking the primary writing role in the group, and the others kind of stepped back and let him lead. In the end, that lead to a lot of hard feelings in the band and further pushed Waters into isolation to the point he thought he was the sole reason the band was successful (again his supposed "wall" he built around himself). That is why he just couldn't believe that the others could carry on the Pink Floyd name without him, and why he took them to court over it.
But say what you want about Waters, he was a genius when it came to writing songs and creating album concepts. Gilmour even stated while making Momentary Lapse of Reason that it was hard to do it without Waters' creativity (and I think Gilmour even had to hire someone to write most of the lyrics on the album).

That show in 94 in the Dome sucked, really. The sound was, as is usual in the Superdome, craptastic. Maybe it was better if you were on the floor in front the clam shell, but in the stands it seemed like they were a mile away.
The cops were assholes during that show too.
I like a few songs off The Wall a whole lot, but there's a lot of it I don't care for. It's certainly miles from being their best work.

Like I said, it was a concept album. It was never intended to be a singles album (even though they got several good radio worthy singles out of it). But the album is intended to be listened to from beginning to end because it tells a story. But you're right, a lot of the individual songs weren't worthy of listening to on their own.

This is true of all of their biggest albums. The Wall doesn't suck because it's a concept album. It sucks because of the weird songs and whiny vocals.

Love the wall, but it's not a singles album. In fact, much of the work is fluid, theatrical stuff that doesn't play well as a single. As a whole, it works and works very well.
Another Brick in the Wall (part 2) may be my least favorite Pink Floyd song, but there are some really good parts of that album.

Prefer David Gilmour over Roger Waters. Waters - great songwriter. Gilmour - great performer & musician. Both have made Pink Floyd a band for the ages, IMO.
Love "The Wall" from 1982 - I have the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition DVD (movie). Great.
The "Pulse" DVD - Pink Floyd In Concert - live at Earl's Court in London 1994 is my favorite. By far. Lights, sights and sounds in hi-def and Dolby Digital 5.1 on DVD from '06. Amazing, IMO.
