This is true of all of their biggest albums. The Wall doesn't suck because it's a concept album. It sucks because of the weird songs and whiny vocals.
I guess concept album is the wrong way to describe it. You're right, starting with Dark Side of the Moon and going forward, they were all concept albums. Where The Wall differed is that it was basically a rock opera. It told a concise story about the character Pink from beginning to end.
But it did have as many, if not more, songs that got radio play as the other Floyd albums. You had Another Brick in the Wall 2, Mother, Young Lust, Hey You, Comfortably Numb, and Run Like Hell which all got radio play.
I think the issue a lot of people have with it is that there are so many songs that you really either have to hear in accordance with the album as a whole like In The Flesh?, The Thin Ice, Goodbye Blue Sky, One of My Turns, Another Brick in the Wall 3, Nobody Home, The Show Must Go On, In The Flesh, and Waiting For the Worms; or songs that really should be played in accordance with other songs like Another Brick in the Wall 1 -> The Happiest Days Of Our Lives -> Another Brick in the Wall 2, or Empty Spaces -> Young Lust
There are really on a handful of songs on the album that I skip when listening to the whole album. I think if they would've cut it down to a single LP, instead of making it a double LP, it could've been their best commercial album next to Dark Side.

i love 'the wall' (although 'animals' & WYWH are my favorites), but if it wasn't for bob ezrin, i dread thinking how that album would've turned out. he (ezrin) deserved alot of credit for it, but we know waters' ego wouldn't have had any of it....
that said, when the hell are they gonna release a blu-ray from roger's 'wall' tour? what a breathtaking show that was....

I 100% agree.
The 'hit' radio songs were some of their best, rock's best...but then surrounded by Waters' filler crap.
Cut all that out, and you'd have perfection.
