Man what happened to this guy from his debut album “Sneakin Sally Through the Alley” to the canned pop presentation of “Simply Irresistible” and “Addicted to Love?”

He started out recording with Lowell George and Allen Toussaint of Little Feat. Art Neville, George Porter Jr., Joseph Modeliste, and Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, and Steve Winwood of Traffic all the same debut album. Hell, his vocals on that album and on later cuts don’t sound anything like his vocals just 12 years later.

It could be said that he is one of the biggest sell outs to the MTV era ever. Right up there with what Chicago did when they went all power ballad with songs like “Hard to say I’m Sorry” and “Hard Habit to Break.”

But I guess he laughed in the end. He probably made more money off the women cyborg guitar players in that one video than he ever would have had he not changed styles.

This song has been coming up on a couple of my pandora stations in the last few months. Yesterday, I had my phone in hand and saw it was Robert Palmer. I was shocked.

You’re right. Everything about his sound and voice changed. Weird

That’s exactly what prompted me to go back and listen to a bunch of his old stuff too. I wanted to add some stuff to my catalog and went to ITunes and types in his name to see if there was some stuff that I wasn’t aware that he did. That was the first song that I saw and was like “wtf?” I have heard that song all my life (49 years old) and never knew that was him. That 1st album with that all star cast of musicians was really good. A whole different sound than what he did a decade later. I do like the sound of “Every Kind of People” though. But the stuff he did that really made him a temporary pop icon was like night and day from his 1st two albums.

The Power Station was badass.

The Power Station was a 1980s supergroup made up of singer Robert Palmer, former Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and Duran Duran members John Taylor (bass) and Andy Taylor (guitar). Bernard Edwards, also of Chic, was involved on the studio side as recording producer

Song was good, the video was kind of a Billy Squier 'Rock Me Tonight' situation.

His early stuff was some of the most supreme white boy funk ever put on vinyl. Just amazing music, and never safe. I’ve revisited it a lot in the last few months. That’s how I choose to remember him.

He didn’t keep making the same style of music. That’s not the same thing as selling out. The early stuff is my favorite but I think Riptide and the Power Station record are great too, and they weren’t exactly conventional sounding at the time. I like the yacht rock middle years too. He was the man.

He changed his sound to the times. I like most of his catalog and Power Station was kick arse. Lonely Tonight is a constant spin for me
