RIP

But, as a lifetime guitar player, really could just never get into him. Same thing with Ry Cooder, Alan Holdsworth and Al DiMeola etc. Players we were "supposed" to like and believe were greatly influential, but to me, the songwriting just was not there. A lot more masturbation than music, IMO.

And here's a nugget for the final rain of downvotes: if I have to answer quickly my favorite Beck tune - I think it would have to be Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory...

This is an absolute kick in the plums. Best guitarist that ever lived. Could play any style, Les Paul, Telecaster, Stratocaster, pick, finger pick, rock, blues, jazz, techno, old Broadway show tunes, opera arias, hymns, he did everything every way imaginable.

I haven't looked into any details yet. In my mind I am going to believe me he was crushed while tinkering under one of the cars in his Jay Leno/Reggie Jackson sized colletion. Feel that is how he would have wanted to go.

You had to be “ that guy”. Worst take ever and yeah, it’s definitely not for the ladies. Because “we ended as lovers” for instance is masturbation ? No it’s soulful as F and as wonderfully emotionally interpretive as anything out there. If you hated technical/fusion as a genre or style just say that. And of course you are forgetting his Yardbirds and other stuff where he was playing a more conventional “songwriting” bunch of tunes. Yikes.

List his top 5 songs that you think are worthy of our worship.

Nowhere near the same league as Satriani/Vai/Johnson/Vaughn/Trower/etc.

Nah. I respect the fact he is so revered (again, as a lifetime guitar guy). I've always been disappointed that he never resonated with me.

I'll listen to it now, on your implied recommendation.

I certainly do not gain positive utility from it.

I actually think he just in general wasn't a very prolific songwriter. That's fine. Not everyone has to like everything.

Well I agree with that and like you personally so let’s agree to respectfully disagree since this is an OBIT thread. We all like what we like.

"Jeff Beck Live At Ronnie Scott's" is one for the ages.
Thanks for all the great music Jeff!

I listen to him for the first time just a few weeks ago. He had a very entertaining and clever playing style.

So, listening through Cause
We Ended as Lovers for the 3rd time through. This definitely scratches me more where I itch (good tone too). But it definitely does have that "fusion" feel going on in the background that takes me out of it a little bit.

Also, I would add Zappa to the list of "supposed to like, but I just don't get it".

Anyway, RIP Mr. Beck. Wish I could know some of the hard livin' stories people keep referencing...

He’s been a vegetarian for like 50 years, had a badass car collection he worked on constantly and looked fit as hell. So I’m not getting this reference to hard partying.

Terrible loss. The guy was still playing well

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, once said that Beck was the greatest of all the rock guitarists. That's pretty high praise coming from another legendary guitarist. When asked why he thought that Baxter said that Beck was the only one of the greats who still surprised him every time he played. Baxter said that with other top guitarists, they were great players, but he pretty much always knew where they were going and what they were going to play. Beck was the only guy who still surprised him

And RIP to Jeff Beck. I never really got into his music, but I appreciate his greatness.

Yeah, this one hurts a lot. Inevitable that we lose these guys but Jeff Beck was one of my most admired musicians out there. He didn't just do one thing then coast, he updated, learned, and also continued engaging with younger folks. The last couple of things I saw/heard from him were with a younger band. Glad that even though he was up there in age, he lived in an era where we can access a lot of what he created and his influence can live on.
