One and Fade to Black are almost too close to call for me. Along with Master of Puppets, those are probably my 3 favorite Metallica songs.

I have recently been on a Metallica kick and just purchased all of their albums because I had to reset my iTunes and lost all my music from the Napster days

Fade to Black holds a special place for me because it was the first song i seriously learned how to play on guitar. I used to sit for hours just trying to perfect the little riffs and rhythms before i moved onto the solo. It's the reason I first picked up a guitar and it's the reason i love rhythm/riff guitar more than anything.
Welcome Home always blows my mind. I always forget how good it is until i listen to it and the middle section kicks my arse every time.
One is just a perfect song.
As far as ranking them goes? I couldn't do that. It would change based on the day/ my mood.

The longer I live, the more I think this is their best song and, maybe, the best heavy song of the (ETA: I stand corrected) the 1980s.

Dadgum - that's right - AJFA was late 80s, because Metallica was 1990.
So, best heavy song of the 1980s, then.

No. One is still better than that.
(ETA: The Trooper might be up there, on a good day, though, with One.)

And as good as The Number of the Beast is (particularly side 2), you know what elevates The Trooper?
Nicko McBrain (GOAT drummer name) over Clive Burr.

Choice changes based on my mood. Fade to Black brings back memories of learning to play guitar, as does One. One solo was the first tapping lick I learned to play and opened up so many doors. Sanitarium is just super fun to play. They're all great.
Historically with a gun to my head...
Fade to Black
One
Sanitarium

Although not thrash, Unforgiven is pretty sweet

This!!
I self learned Fade to Black as well as Nothing Else Matters. Also a strong contender to be in the top 3 with that Hetfield solo, at least in the video he plays it.
Beautiful music man! When the wife goes to bed early I will occasionally pull out the old six string and play these songs along with some Tesla, Crue, etc.
Good Times and greater memories!!

Fade to Black is my favorite, just ahead of One, and is one of my favorite metal ballads of all time. It’s right up there with Hallowed Be Thy Name, Blackbird (Alter Bridge), November Rain, So Far Away (Avenged Sevenfold), and Same Sorrow (Luke Starkiller).
