Question about Cat's in the Cradle

The dad says his son grew up and is just like him because he doesn't have any time for his dad now after his dad not having any time for him growing up. But one of the reasons the son can't see the dad then is because the kids have the flu which means the son is taking care of them. Which seems to me like the son is being a better father than his dad was and isn't just like him.

Maybe his son wasn't even sick, he was just making excuses.
Bu it's sure nice talking to you, we'll get to gether soon.

I always took it as the both had the same view of their (father/son) relationship. Something was always more important than spending time with the other one.

Song about a father who takes an odd pride in his son’s treating him shitty just like the father treated him when he was a kid.
Heart warming.

Nothing indicates any pride on the part of the father, just remorse and disappointment.

Is this the song about the adolescent son that brings home his gay African American lover to meet his family, but he ends up drilling his mother and sister behind his back?

Nothing indicates remorse and disappointment to me. It’s open to interpretation as is most music and art.

The fact that the father changes his behavior halfway through the song suggests that he's recognized the error of his ways.
To me that suggests remorse and disappointment, even if it isn't explicit.

To me it just suggests the natural progression of getting older not remorse or disappointment in their youthful attitude and behavior.

Ugly kid Joe was the best version

It’s a sad song with a very poignant message. Don’t ever take your children for granted and never miss an opportunity to be a dad to them. They grow up so fast and you’ll regret your failings as a father and lament that you can never get it back. Take it from me, a father whose kids are almost grown. I severely miss the days when they were little, so much so that I get emotional about it regularly. I was there for them and feel like I was a good dad but it still tugs at my heart strings.

^^This^^
as a dad well said, this song actually influenced me as a kid growing up in the 70's my older sister had this 45. Somehow even as a little shite I understood the sadness of the song. Many times when I wanted to do my own thing that I had to cherish those moments with my son.

No offense but you don’t understand the listener/viewer interpretation aspect of music and art.

Terrible take. The song is about the epiphany - "Oh shite!"

No offense, but you don’t understand that the listener/viewer interpretation aspect of music and art can be completely wrong.
Harry and his wife think you are wrong too.

Interview with his wife who wrote it:
"Cat's In The Cradle" was a combination of a couple of things. Whenever I was on a long drive I would listen to country music, because words would keep me awake more than just music. And I heard a song… I can remember the story, but I don't remember who sang it or what the title was, but an old couple were sitting at their breakfast table and looking out the window, and they saw the rusted swing and the sandbox, and they were reminiscing about the good old days when all the children were around and then the grandchildren, and how it passed, and now it's all gone. So that was part of the idea. The other part of the idea - this is always a problem, because Harry introduced the song at all his concerts and said, "This is a song my wife wrote to zap me because I wasn't home when our son Josh was born." I was always kind of amused by that because of the fact that we learn life's lessons too late, right? Would you agree with that?

No. You’re thinking of “You Light Up My Life”.
