I have a Yairi DY-38, laminated back/sides, solid top, and would put it up against just about any other acoustic below $3k.
Yeah, the lamination techniques have come a long way. I still buy solid when I can though.

Blizzard of Chizz;thank you for all the tips on Barre Chords.I haven't put it into practice yet,but I can visualize what you said about using my forearm and body,so to take all the work from my fingers.
It'll take time,but you've given me a plan.Thanks.
That’s awesome! Let me know how it works out. I tried forever and just couldn’t play barre chords. It wasn’t until I was surfing around YouTube one day and saw someone reveal the secret. I stopped the video, grabbed my guitar and tried it. It worked. Couldn’t believe it. Taught me a valuable lesson though. If there is something you find yourself unable to play for wherever reason, look for a technique to overcome it. Take power chords for example. Most everyone is taught to play them with their first and third finger. However, if you play them with your first and fourth (pinky), fingers 2 and 3 are freed up giving you new, quicker ways to move and transition around the fretboard.

My Dad has a Guild acoustic/ electric that he bought back in 68 before he went to Vietnam. It’s sat in the case for the past 50 years because he had his eardrum blown out after the truck he was in went over a land mine. Last time I saw it, the plastic/ vinyl material that the logo is adhered to on the headstock was coming off and the nut needed replacing, but the guitar itself is in pristine condition. He swears the entire body is made out of Rosewood, but I have no idea. I’m sure it’s probably just the neck. It’s a beautiful guitar though. I’ve thought about having it repaired but I’m almost too afraid of what it would cost me.

I'm sure it is rosewood, probably with a spruce top. installing a new nut, strings and adjusted probably less than 50 bucks. I'm not sure what you mean about the logo. can you post a photo? It's worth doing for sure.

I'm appreciative for this thread. New years resolution is to learn to play. A friend lent me an acoustic and I have been at it since Jan 6. Finally starting to notice progress and have the habit set to pick it up and practice every night when I get off. Super basic stuff for you boys, but happy to pretend to be part of the club.

Great. That's what this thread is for, all of us are just learning. Some have just been learning longer than others.

Don't expect to get a quality bone or synthetic nut replacement, a set-up (adjustments to truss rod, saddle height) and new strings for "probably less" than $50, fyi. Plan to spend double that, likely a little more, for a reputable tech in your market to do that work.
Edited to add ... the headstock issue described on the Guild is probably a head veneer separation. That's not a difficult fix.

FretShack, I had it done on a cheap acoustic electric that I bought the other day(right before Christmas) at a local shop, that I do a lot of business with. He slotted a blank synthetic nut for a high strung Nashville tuning. He did that, strung it, and adjusted the action the way that he knows I like it, for 57 bucks.I dropped it off in the morning and picked it up that same afternoon, right before he closed. It's something that I could have just done myself, but didn't have the time to get it done quick. I wanted it for a jam session.
Now maybe that's a deal, because I am a big customer, or maybe because we are in a more rural area with way less Overhead (I know his shop rental is only about 300 bucks per month), I don't know. Everything he has ever done for me has been really good, and he stays busy.
He doesn't do any restorations, or anything like that, just repairs.

On the headstock is the plastic like material logo. Similar to the way a Gibson does their head stocks. It’s separated from the headstock. Similar to this only I believe it’s a single cutaway and no trem. Color wise it looks exactly like this.

I was hoping you would post a photo of the actual guitar, and a close up of the damage. It's probably like Fretshack said, The Veneer just separating.
Sounds like your Dad's guitar is probably a semi-hollow electric. A little different from what I had pictured, and getting it in playing shape will take a bit more work, most likely, but it is worth doing for sure.
What general area do you live in?

I’ll have to get a pic the next time I’m at my parents house. I live around the Birmingham area though. Veneer was the word I was looking for. It’s just separated from the headstock but not completely though.

You know where Childersburg is? On 280 between Birmingham and Auburn? It's about 35 miles from 459.
There's a guy there, that you should have look at it. He has a shop called Rick's guitars. He's a good guy and will give you a price up front. He's been in business for a long time. His shop is right on 280.

Hope you will still remember to post some photos. I'm interested to see something, that has just been sitting in a case for that long.

My mom just sent me a bunch of pics. Give a few minutes to figure out how to post them.

Looks like it’s missing a tuner but otherwise it’s in great shape. Just needs to be cleaned up

Wow, That's an awesome guitar. I think that is going to be a Manhattan or Starfire model (Probably a starfire, there is a star on The pickguard) maybe, Hollow body. It's going to take a little work and money, but it will be worth every penny. Maybe the missing tuner is in the case.
I have to go by ricks shop tomorrow. I will show him the photos and tell you what he says. That thing can look great.

I’m not sure what model it is. I do know there is a label inside the guitar. The width of the body is kind of thick, like 3 or 4 inches. Mom wasn’t sure where the tuner was. The case itself has deteriorated around the guitar from what she said. Supposedly Guild has a lifetime warranty on these guitars at the time they were built.

That's a sweet looking Guild!

Pretty sure it's going to be a Starfire model, They had several different ones with different options and control configurations, Starfire II, Starfire III, Starfire IV, for example.
I can tell you one thing ,that I know for damn sure: I would love to have it. You lucky dog.
