It would be great if one of you guys who know what the hell you are doing could list out some easy beginner scales that a few of us beginners could use in practice.
Would be mucho helpful.

I promise you Lanier, what I suggested, isn't over your head. It's just a matter of tuning all of the strings down, the same amount. If you don't like it, you can tune them right back up.
I think you will like that booming and growly sound you will be able to get.
In general, this isn't just about guitar playing. You can master anything that you decide to do. Every one of us. Don't ever let other people tell you what your limits are.

Learn the five positions of the pentatonic scale. Start with Gmaj/em.
Gmaj/Em are relative keys, which means they share the same notes. If you play the above scale patterns over any song in Gmaj/Em, it will sound pretty good. Position 1 is the beginning soloists bread and butter.

I hope I write this correctly.
I'm welcome to be wrong, but simplest and easiest and "best" scale for a beginner is the minor pentatonic:
e 1 - 4
B 1 - 4
G 1 - 3
D 1 - 3
A 1 - 3
E 1 - 4
So, take key of G. Play the "1" spot on the E string at the 3rd fret, a G note with your index finger. (the 3rd fret is "1"/index finger for every string in the key of G.) Then move 3 frets up, play that 4 spot with your pinky. Drop to the A string, play the 1 spot on the third fret w your index finger, but only move up 2 frets for the next note, play it with your ring finger. Just follow the shape. Make sense?
Every key you play in, the root note fret is always the 1 spot/index finger (A is 5, B is 7, C is 8, etc). Play the same shape.
Oh, what's cool about this, is if you slide your hand down a bit and start with the "4" on the E string as the root note with your pinky (instead of E1-4, A1-3, D1-3, etc., you play E4, A1-3, D1-3 etc.) you'll play a MAJOR pentatonic scale.
The shape stays the same as you move up and down the neck. Just use the E string notes to set the key for the scale. So for MINOR pentatonic B, start on the 7th fret as the "1" w your index finger and play the shape. For MAJOR pentatonic B, start on the 7th fret/pinky as the 4, then play the shape (but omit the "1" on the E string).
Do this about 1,000 times, you'll get the hang of it.

I’ve been playing guitar for 13 years and still make it look very hard
Posted on 3/15/21 at 9:50 am to kingbob
I'm 51 and have owned a guitar of some sorts since I was probably 16. I still can't play for shite, but I enjoy screwing around with it. My problem is I'll find cool riffs on youtube and watch them all and spend a 10 minutes playing along and then move on to something else. I never spend the time to master anything. Plus find myself constantly tinkering because 1 video is standard, the next 1/2 step down, then a drop D down a full step, etc.

I did this for years. Do yourself a favor and sit down and learn a song back to front. Learn the rhythm, then the leads, and any fills.
So much fun.

I've only been playing for a couple months, but I agree that it makes me realize how much I don't know about music. It's fun, though. Some days are really frustrating and I sound like a drowning cat, but other days I get in the zone and can sound okayish.
I've been using Justin Guitar for all of my lessons. I finished the first intro course a couple weeks ago and am fine tuning it before moving on to level two. His lessons are free, though I've donated some because he's kept me motivated. He has practice routines that help me stay focused.
If you're curious about scales, I saw he had a new upload about the G major scale the other day.

Can someone explain the purpose of playing and learning scales?
Sort of teaches your fingers where they are supposed to be. Or where the next note should be. Mainly talking about soloing and improvising. Which at my skill level would be more noodling. Basically taught me that if a note or a chord shape sounds like shite, slide it up or down 2 frets.

Agree - Every time I try I just go back to drums. 32nd note bass/tom rolls are easier than making one chord change imo.
I have a Taylor acoustic that sits in the closet and has less than an hour played on it in 3 years.

It got a cutaway? I’m looking to upgrade my acoustic game

Taylor GS Mini I think is what it is called. Not super expensive but a good "learner" or my dad said when telling me what to get.
looks like this

Bumped for a status check. How's it going for everyone?

I was just thinking of this thread the other day and how I need to start on practicing scales. Thanks for your write up.
I had gotten into learning scales over a decade ago but lost interest. I’ve been getting way more into song writing lately and would like to learn more to add to that. Just wrote 2 songs in the last month after getting some inspiration and knowledge from some kind baws on this board like you. I hadn’t wrote anything in 12 years before that.

I do remember that thread. In fact, it’s one of the threads that has stood out in my mind the past few years when I think about whether or not I could write something again.
to you.
