Bumped for a status check. How's it going for everyone?
Not great. Surgery on my right arm last year and this year I got a bad burn on the index finger of my left hand so no fretting for quite a while. I'm taking a little step back from my business this summer and will have more free time and I hope to pick it back up in earnest then.

Can someone explain the purpose of playing and learning scales?
I am late into this thread, but I have been playing guitar for the last 10 years or so in various bands. Have a gig coming up Thursday. I know the pentatonic scale and can apply it to the fretboard, but I rarely use them. I also only play rhythm guitar so I don't have much need to lead or solo. I learned all of my chords and then started listening and playing along to songs I liked (and were my skill level) then grew from there.
I will say this to OP, try to figure out what you want to get out of playing guitar. If you want to play lead guitar then definitely sit and hammer out your scales and learn the fretboard. I just wanted to play songs I liked on the radio and started there.
Good luck! It gets really fun when it clicks. Even more fun when you can get paid to entertain people when you play!

Do what I do. Keep buying guitars in the hope that one day you will buy one you can actually play. I am up to 9 different type guitars and am am real close to being able to play a whole song.
