Who ya got?
Both have a similar sound, particularly when listening to Buck on R.E.M's early albums.

I think Noel Gallagher has yet to return a sweet black Les Paul to Johnny Mar.
ETA I couldn´t choose between the two, unless at gunpoint, and even then, I´d doubt too long, and they´d shoot.

I hate the Smiths, but not because of Johnny Marr. The Smiths is an exercise in Morrissey ruining great guitar parts by a truly gifted artist with his whiny arse voice and even whinier lyrics.
I love REM, but Johnny Marr is a guitar god.

This is my opinion as well. I don't hate the Smiths but I'm not a fan of Morrissey and think he overshadowed Marr far more than he should have.
I love REM and Buck's guitar work on the early albums, but if I were starting a band and I had to pick between the two I'd pick Marr

To me, thats part of what makes the Smiths so great... the juxtaposition of Marr's upbeat guitar to Morrisey's lyrics... it works so well..

God knows I love Buck, but its kinda like he is a guy who basically learned to play in order to serve those particular songs. There is definitely no better guitarist for that particular band, and in that particular time and place.
Marr is truly a unique talent and would have shined in any band. Guitar God indeed.
(pretty sure PB would agree, btw)

Marr, unless you're on crack.

To clarify, for my taste, that sweet jangle of Buck's rick gets me every time... it is right in my wheel house for things I like most about music...
That said I'm a huge Marr fan and its like choosing between the Beatles and Stones for me...
