I lived right down the road from Swaggart Ministries for a while in BR. Always felt weird driving by that place. Couldn't stand him.

Never been a huge solo Ozzy fan for some reason (mostly the voice, which for some reason I like better in the early Sabbath work) but that was pretty great, thanks for sharing.

Ozzy banned from BR '84

I would like to add some pertinent history to this thread, mainly because the events have never been forgotten or forgiven. In 1982, the infamous Bat Biting incident occurred when someone threw a Bat onstage and Ozzie bit off it's head. Not knowing it was a real Bat. Then BR DA, Ossie Brown decided he would ban Ozzie from playing his upcoming show in BR. This cost me my chance to see Randy Rhoads as he died shortly after in a plane crash. Not to be denied, Ozzie did a show in 1983 at the State Fair Grounds with Jake E. Lee on guitar. Warm up bands where Blue Oyster Cult, Vandenberg and LeRoux. Fantastic concert!!! BR was promptly black balled by promoters because of Ossie's actions against Ozzie. During this period before all of this, BR was top 5 tour stop with just about every major tour stopping here.

Yeah, I read this thread and my first thought was the BR leader who halted Ozzy's BR tour stop was actually Ossie Brown, not Swaggert. I had tickets to that cancelled concert too decades ago too.

I remember there was a big stink too when AC/DC came to the Centroplex on the For Those About to Rock tour and ticket sales far exceeded state fire marshal limits. So local officials stopped general admission at the Centroplex and had reserved seating only, which also sucked, to cap attendance at what they could seat.

Between the local DA's actions in the early 80s, the then-new Cajundome booking touring acts, UNO and Biloxi's venues being more accommodating ... BR got bypassed for practically everything. I saw more national touring acts in Shreveport's Hirsch Coliseum (the equivalent of LSU's Parker Ag Center back then) in the 80s than I did in BR.

We were so excited for this concert. Ozzy, Randy! We were huge, and I mean huge, Randy Rhoads fans. Still sick about it after all these years.

Was there! Yes, awesome concert. If I remember correctly (I’m probably not), LSU played a basketball game earlier in the day, Senior Day, with Howard Carter and a few of the other guys who were graduating from those great years. Later on in the day the concert kicked off. Great day all around!

The way I recall it, it had more to do with Ozzy urinating on the Alamo Centopath in Feb. Certainly, the local BTR politicians were looking for any excuse to prevent him from playing. The bat biting was bad, but really only hurt Oz. The urination on a sacred site, however, was seen as a cultural affront. I'm sure it was an amalgam of all the events and the burgeoning Satanic Panic of the time.

Didn't they also chase away Priest in 1984 because they were going to play BTR on Easter Sunday?

I saw VH and Kiss there. Man what a dump! And to think it was still hosting concerts until 2000

You know it wasn’t Swaggart who had him canceled right? It was some frickstick named David Diamond, some kind of local Baptist (I think) preacher who lead a crusade against it.

My buddy and I were the very first in line for tickets to that show. I had gone out the Friday morning before tickets went on sale and set up shop outside the Centroplex ticket office a good 22 hours or so ahead of time. I had everything I needed and my buddy was going to come down later that afternoon when he was done with work. After I was out there for about an hour the lady from inside the ticket office came out and told me that the manager had seen me and didn’t want me to be out there that whole time so he wanted her to get my name and how many tickets I wanted and to tell me that I could come back the next morning and go straight to the front of the line. So I traipsed back to my dad’s café where I worked a few blocks away and just wound up working the rest of the day.

The next morning when we arrived there was a quite a line that had formed including quite a few people who had obviously camped out. My buddy and I walked up and man was there some grumbling when we were first in line.

We were fired up as hell for this show too. Ozzy and Accept were our two favorite acts going at that time. So incredibly angry when that a-hole got it canceled.

Turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened though. That show had been scheduled for June 4. They were scheduled to play in Biloxi two days later on the 6th. We just said to hell with it and made the trip to Biloxi and saw it there. First in line at the door there too. This one was general admission though which is so much better than reserved. The doors opened and with the mad dash we wound up right on the wall. One of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen.

Yep. I was at this one as well. You damn right. It was a GREAT show.

My other Ozzy concert story for this thread happened on this day. My buddy (same one) and I were planning on taking his car, or some family car of theirs, to go to the show. Suddenly though his dad just decided to be an arse and said he couldn’t take it. So we we’re in scramble mode. I knew my dad wouldn’t let me take his car to the concert so I went and worked him hard, begging him for the car so my friend and I could eat some pizza and go to a movie.

He finally relented and as he was handing me the keys he said “If you go anywhere near that Ozzy Osbourne concert I’ll have your head in a sack”. I said no dad we’re not going to that concert. Picked my buddy up and away we went. Poor dear old dad never knew better.

Correct in two ways FretShack. Ossie cancelled him in ‘82 and then in ‘84 he was cancelled again, but by the aforementioned douchebag David Diamond and not Swaggart.

This is correct! Pretty sure it was Tennessee we were playing and there was a controversial ending. I think we even lost due to the controversial ending. It somehow involved replay review by the officials LONG before such a thing even existed.

First time I saw Ozzy was around ‘82 at the Day of Rock at Tad Gormley Stadium (City Park) in New Orleans. There was a brief interview with him on the local news the night before, and he said he had a surprise for the audience. He comes out on stage looking like his usual self, then rips off a wig to reveal a completely shaved head. Legendary moment. Brad Gillis of NightRanger fame was on guitar that night.

Well the Advocate decided to do a story on what actually happens inside of a rock concert. When they blasted pictures of teens all fricked up and passed out on the front page of the newspaper, Ossie and his Baptist coalition went ape shite. Ossie did a lot to hamper the wildlife in BR around that time beyond squashing a thriving concert market. He implemented alcohol sales restrictions and closed down all the bars that stayed open all night across the river.

Yeah, but that run of concerts in BR during the 70's would rival any other city from that time period. We were lucky....

It really was amazing! So many good acts came to BR. Still have all my old concert stubs from back then somewhere in storage. Need to dig them out and post.

Right, it wasn't the Swag that got Ozzy cancelled...but when Ozzy heard "Louisiana preacher gets busted with prostitute" I'm guessing the song idea came pretty quickly.

We saw Ozzy at UNO on the "No More Tours" tour in '92. I'm sure he took a little more pleasure singing that tune in NOLA. Still one of the best concerts I've seen.

Was there!! Zac Wylde on guitar, Alice In Chains as warm up band. Layne Staley on crutches wailing his ARSE off. What a great show that was. Thanks for the memory....

I mean that's how the story goes. Ozzy was reported to have gotten rabies shots after that show
