1- They rock
2- Washed up band
3- Elevator music or too pop
4- Who's Toto? a water closet brand?

I've been a fan since the 80's. They caught my attention for 3 things. Jeff Porcaro was bad arse playing drums and one of my all time favorite drummers; everybody in the band sang vocals to the point that you were not sure if it was a Toto song and Steve Lukather is an under rated musician/guitarist.

I really like about 5 of their songs and don't really know many others. Not a fan of their ballads, except 99, which Lukather supposedly hates, for some reason.

Africa and Roseanna were popular when it was a great time to be alive(83/84) and hitting the teen years, so they'll always have sentimental value.

I had no idea that original singer David Kimball grew up in Vinton, La, graduated from McNeese, and spent the early 70s playing around Nola before moving to LA.

I think that he was too hard on himself. I remember reading somewhere that while they were recording Africa, he thought that it was a terrible song, and made a bet with one of the band members that if the song was a major hit, he would walk naked along Wilshire Blvd. Which of course, he lost the bet.

I can see why he would think that. The lyrics are about as cheesy as they get. It still sounds great, though.

It's kinda like Georgie Porgie in that way, I guess. Great sounding song but the lyrics are pretty dumb(even if they were written on a bet).

TOTO are awesome. The wife and I saw them in 2018. She was unaware that they were basically Michael Jackson's studio band until Steve talked about writing Human Nature before they played it.

Extremely talented but their music is just average pop stuff.

I'm sure you've heard many more. Except they swap lead singers. Wait, you never heard this one?

Love the guitar solo on Hold the Line.

Lukather is a very talented studio musician if you look at his credits. However he seems like a snobby a-hole.
His signature guitar looks nice.

I believe the exact opposite. I read his autobiography, "The Gospel According to Luke", and thought it was great. Dude is uber-skilled. Some of his stories are hilarious. I heard him on Joe Bonamossa's podcast and he killed it. He has led a blessed life, and he knows it.

It was pretty safe, homogenized soft/mainstream rock in the same tradition as Fleetwood Mac.

And, like with Fleetwood Mac, there was a shite ton of musical talent in the band and they had great songs.

This is a great opportunity to whip out this Randy Newman classic:

Did you Toto fans realize that I Love L.A. is effectively a Toto song?

Bonus fact: Christine McVie and Lindsay Buckingham are backing vocalists, and, of course, Waddy Wachtel on rhythm guitar.
