Man, I had let YEARS go by since the last time I heard this. And now, it's been 3 straight weeks of blasting it loud and not being able to get it out of my head.
Truly, one of the perfect and great albums of all time.
It's amazing to me how great the bass tone and groove is. The rhythm section really keeps it locked down.
The guitars are perfectly written - and in a way that makes it hard to figure out exactly what they're doing so you can play it yourself. The chorus to Suite Sister Mary is a perfect example of this.
I think my favorites at this point are the title track (I don't think I ever fully realized how much it rocks) and The Mission.
I think the genius of this album was how business-like it seemed. It's metal, but still accessible and is clearly a serious work of art.

This album would easily be in the top five for albums I've listened to the most in my lifetime. There was probably a span of five years or so where I listened to this album at least twice a week, maybe more. I haven't listened to it in years but I guarantee I would know every lyric and note if I did. One of the greatest concept albums of all time. There are some that are equally as good, but none that surpass it. It's something that is rare in music, a true masterpiece album.

It is a fantastic album. Saw them in 1991 when they did the whole record. They 7 songs first (mostly from Empire but also Walk In The Shadows and Roads To Madness) then did the entire Mindcrime album, then an encore of Take Hold of the Flame and Silent Lucidity.
Great show.
Great show.

Incredible record. Breaking The Silence is what got me into Queensryche and they eventually became a top band for me.
You’re right about the guitars. The stuff isn’t hard to play, but it took me quite a bit longer to pick the songs out than it normally does for other bands. So much going on, lots of cool stuff layered in

I know Silent Lucidity was in Guitar World once upon a time, because it's how I know how to play it
or at least used to anyway.

I agree it is an awesome album... however for me The Warning is their best

To call it a masterpiece even sells it short. There is absolutely no weak link to be found. One of the greatest albums ever made in ANY genre IMHO.

my old guitar teacher went to a concert in the 90s where they played Mindcrime and Empire back to back in their entireties. couldnt imagine witnessing that

"Anybody home? Mary?"
Even in death
You still look sad
Don't leave me
Don't leave me, here
I want what you feel, believe me
Turn the current on

An amazing album that continues to be one of my all time favorites.

I'll be the contrarian here. Operation Mindcrime and Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album are the two most depressing albums I've ever heard.

I've never thought Mindcrime was depressing. It's an interesting story with some themes in it that are still relevant. It's a little dark but it's also complete fiction. As far as Nebraska goes, I won't disagree with you. But I can't stand Bruce Springsteen's mumbling arse and his fake blue collar bullshite anyway. Easily in the top five most overrated musicians in history.

I've never really understood why artists make music that would only turn up on a jump off of a roof play list.

I’ve never understood why they wouldn’t.
