One year later: Southeastern vs. Something More Than Free

For me, Southeastern is a top 3 record in my lifetime. It has had a profound impact on me and I have not found a better album lyrically.
With that said, Something More Than Free is also fantastic. At first I didn't think that, but from beginning to end it is top notch. The album has grown on me tremendously over the past year. There are a few songs on Southeastern i dont absolutely love, but I don't have that on SMTF. It's more complete from beginning to end.
Regardless..I take Southeastern overall, but SMTF is a great album.
We are lucky to get to see and enjoy Isbell in his prime.

Southeastern is remarkable considering where Ol boy was in life when he wrote it... It's such a far cry from the shite that is consistently put out on radio.
That being said I'll be heading to the whitewater amphitheater to check him out in September and catch him in NOLA as well.

Damn bro, you think Dylan is better? How original. You're probably the only person in music history to have that opinion.
Southeastern is on the same level as Blood on The Tracks.

My favorite songs of his are from his first album.

I think all of Isbell's albums are pretty inconsistent except SMTF. I respect what Southeastern is and where Isbell was in his personal life when it was made, but I find most of the songs pretty boring, save for 2 or 3. I like every song on SMTF.
If Cover Me Up, Stockholm and Elephant were on SMTF, it would be the perfect album.

a year ago, i would have said SMTF, but as we sit today, i shift back to southeastern. i cant still listen start to finish without skipping a single track.

The highs are higher on Southeastern but there is much more consistently good stuff on SMTF.

Still not a huge fan of a couple of SMTF songs, (Flagship) but overall, very good album. Southeastern still better.
Immediately loved Children of Children, immediately disliked Palmetto Rose.
I've learned that disdain the first time I hear a song is usually a good indicator of which song I won't be able to get enough of 2 months later...

I also give Southeastern the edge over SMTF, but his older albums are just as good as Southeastern.

Elephant, Relatively Easy and Cover Me Up are his 3 best IMO. Amazing songs.
But there are a couple on Southeastern that feel out of place to me, Super 8 in particular. Just so out of place. I like Flying Over Water but it seems a bit out of place as well. I like him best when it's sad, deep stuff. Similar to how I like Ryan Adams most.
SMTF is more cohesive. Nothing feels out of place, though it doesn't have anything on the level of my 3 favorites. Children of Children, Life You Chose are really nice. A few other standouts.

id say pretty spot on to my take the whole way through. at least for today.
super 8 always felt uncomfortable and out of place to me.

This, it's so grating and just doesn't flow with the rest of the album. By itself it's a decent song, but the juxtaposition with the rest of the album just makes me hate it.

yea - i HATED it via album. seeing it live it grew on me. the context makes a big difference. Should have been a b-side on a single or something.
