Cornell and it isn't even close. The question should be, who was runner-up?

None of those other guys had 1/10 of the range Cornell had. He's one of the GOAT voices, period. Just listen to Temple of the Dog.

Mark Lanegan should be in this conversation .... especially since he's still putting out quality music

Screaming Trees just never had the popular following of the others. Great band, though.

You definitely could argue that Cornell was gifted with the best natural voice.

Vedder may be a massive toolbag, but folks can't dismiss his outstanding ability as a vocalist. The dude is incredibly talented.

That whole group is awesome, with Scott Weiland thrown in.

The second part of Hunger Strike is why I don't care for him. Once he starts screaming, I lose all interest.

Cornell (by a mile)

Staley

Weiland

Vedder

Cobain (actually never was impressed with his voice at all and not really crazy about his songwriting either...i am of the schhol of thought that the best thing that ever came from Nirvana was Dave Grohl and the Foo)

Cornell by a longshot then Vedder. As a pure vocalist no one from the grunge scene could ever match Cornell's range.

You don’t think Layne Staley was any good?

He was very good but very one-dimensional when compared to Cornell/Vedder. Much better than Cobain though.
