He is strange but interesting.

Next week he’ll release “Sound & Fury,” his fourth album, and first since “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth,” which went to No. 3 on the Billboard album chart in 2016 and later won the Grammy for best country album. “Sailor’s Guide” was an intimate song cycle about fatherhood that became one of the most acclaimed country — or country-adjacent — albums in recent memory. “Sound & Fury” is an album full of songs fired in the caldron of that new success: resentful, agonized, seething. It is also not a country album. It’s high-viscosity Southern rock à la ZZ Top, with a potent rhythmic undertow. “A sleazy synth-rock dance record,” he said, citing John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers’ album with Eric Clapton, and also the Bee Gees, Cheap Trick, T. Rex and La Roux as touchstones.

I’m a fan, but if I’m being honest I’m a little nervous about this one. The first single he released was just ok for me. Hopefully he gives us another classic and not something mediocre he tried too hard to make “Different”

I know this guy is a Music Board darling, but I just can't get into him. I've tried a couple times and wanted to like his stuff, but it just seems unorganized and bland for all the hype he gets.

Ray Charles made a good country album, so you never know. Could be great. Dude is certainly talented enough to make a good rock record.

Honestly, I find myself listening to Sunday Valley more than his solo stuff.
I'm just not fired up for this one at all. What I've heard so far wasn't anything special. But I am kinda intrigued to see the film an see how it all fits together. Who knows, it might be awesome.

I agree. That Sunday Valley album is brilliant.

The first song off sound and fury sucks.
His last album really was overhyped as frick.
We need to accept that high top and meta modern Sturgill ain’t walking through the door again.

to you. I have it well above High Top, and a slight notch below Metamodern, which I consider one of the 10 best albums of the decade.

I understand that everyone wants him to make more country music records. But he's said from day one that he wasn't going to be the outlaw country savior. I reckon people are disappointed that he is actually sticking to that...
Also, Sailor's Guide is fantastic.

This.
Metamodern
Sailor’s Guide
.
.
High Top Mountain
I’m curious to see what he’s got on the 27th... Wasn’t all that impressed with the single he released a couple weeks ago, but I’ve got hope that there will still be some good stuff. The response by the “he’s the savior of country music” crowd will likely be more entertaining than the album.
I would love about an infinite amount more content similar to Metamodern, but that’s obviously not happening.

I am pumped, Stone Pony just announced he is playing there October 8.

Sailors Guide has grown on me a lot more over the last couple years. It's really a great album, just we all have our particulars and the previous stuff just rings my bell more.
There's a purity and a fire in Sunday Valley that is just off the charts.

Yeah, I just got the email from Bandcamp about that. I'd go to the San Francisco show but I'm splitting town that day.
