OP should update to mention the list is unranked. It's still crap.

List needs Fogerty and Petty as well as the others y'all have mentioned.

It sounds like they are attempting to talk about best Lyricists, which is different than a song writer.
Maybe. I have always thought people focused WAY too much on lyrics as the main aspect of songwriting.

And let's be honest - they wanted as many black artists on the list as possible.

Agree... songwriting is the entire composition, which is why that list is shite being a majority on there don't write the music they sing to.

Kendrick doesn't write any of the beats, Mustard does... So he's not writing a song, he's rapping over beats and is a lyricist.

ETA: Theres a reason there is a genre of "Singer, Songwriter". That person does it all.

So what man

Look at these lyrics. Are you telling me it's not "genius"?

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
There's an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she put the kid away and she’s gone to get a hit
She hates her life and what she’s done to it
There’s one more kid that’ll never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.

Writing a compelling melody is the single hardest act - I would argue - in all of human creative endeavor. Half of these nitwits on the list couldn't even SING a nice melody, much less create one. Bad Bunny?

Smokey Robinson should be #1.

Billy Corgan should be on the list somewhere.

Sound of Silence alone puts Paul Simon on my top 5.

Yes, All Around the World... sounds a lot like Los Lobos to me and I believe the guy in my previous link.

Still love the Graceland album though.

Several people on this list do not write their own songs.

Springsteen should be higher. And Jason Isbell is way better than a lot on the list. Completely disagree with their stated politics but most of the songs don't reflect those politics and are worthy on merit.

Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood from DBT should also be on there, though they’re both lefty froot loops too.

Number one has to be Paul Simon.

After all he wrote "Sound of Silence", "Homeward Bound", "The Boxer" and co-wrote
"Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" just to name a few with Bob Dylan being a very close second.

The more I digest the list, the more annoying it becomes. It's hard now to understand it as anything more than thinly-disguised rage bait.

Bad Bunny is the tell.

Ranking Paul Simon as a better songwriter than Bob Dylan is laughable. And I wasn’t even the one who downvoted you.

I can understand why you rank Dylan before Simon and you might be right.

It was a tough decision for me to make but I based my final decision not only on lyrics but also on the melody of the songs I liked listening to more.

I enjoy listening to Paul Simon's songs more than listening to Bob Dylan's songs but that's just my personal preference.

Paul Simon also wrote "Bridge over Troubled Waters".

What do you think are Bob Dylan's best 5 songs that he wrote?
