Hey now, i was with you in agreeing that only Gish and Siamese Dream are worth the listen. After that, meh at best. But you do not say that about Rush even though you are almost 90% correct.

...and Sonic Youth. I get it. It just makes no sense. You do not seem capable of listening to a song for the song itself. You're going to ask, "Who is this? Let me do some reading on them."

My point is, I only care about personalities to the extent it affects what gets recorded. Corgan's ego is only relevant to the extent that it leads him to record self-indulgent albums with half-formed ideas.

I don't like Sonic Youth's music though I like pretty much everything they stand for and represent. I like Thruston Moore and Kim Gordon as people, and admire them professionally, but I pretty much can't stand their musical output.
So... I don't understand your point. And I really don't know much about Corgan personally other than he keeps popping up in the news mouthing off about his grudges against other artists. Which is kind of funny, but I didn't like his band before he started doing that.
I do think it's funny he got pissed that Pavement made fun of him in a song. But Pavement made fun of STP in the same song, and I rather like STP. They also were shoehorned into grunge despite not really belonging to that scene either socially or sonically. The Pilots were a glam band, and a good one at that.

Gish was raw and edgy and had a really interesting sound. Siamese Dream was more lush but still had some good songs on it...
The rest was just boring and failed to capture my attention. While I didnt hate them and the records may have had a tune or two I didnt mind... They didnt interest me enough to buy 'em...

Sure. I own three Sonic Youth albums I tried so hard to like them. It's just too affected of a sound. Yeah, I don't believe them on Teenage Riot. It's a song called Teenage Riot an there's nothing Teenage or Riot about it. It's a bunch of adults talking to the kids- they are observers, not actors. Every note sounds planned out and prepared in advance - there's no joy or spontaneity in their sound. It's a drag. It's humorless. I don't like it.
I get it and I understand why people admire them. Hell, I admire them as they are central figures in the indie rock explosion of the 90s. They shepherded a lot of bands from obscurity to the mainstream, and that's pretty darn cool. It's impossible to write the history of pop music post 1980 without spending a long time on Sonic Youth. Their influence really can't be understated - they are one of the central bands in changing the rock music industry from the old star model to the thriving world of competing indies we have today. Along with REM, they are the seminal band of post-punk.

Smashing Pumpkins every time for me.
I know it is cliche, but I really think Nirvana gets more attention that they deserve because of the Kurt's suicide.
Also, Nirvana never released anything close to Mellon Collie.

I got your point and sometimes I agree. But in the end is it listenable? Mellon Collie isnt' for me. While, any Rush, on the other hand, for the most part is for me.
Oh and my post was a little tongue-in-cheek.

Yes, humorless. To bring it back to the OP, I think Pumpkins are pretty humorless as well. I like bands that are fun.

I like bands that seem like they could careen into a cliff any moment. It's one of the reasons Guns n Roses is so great. That band sounds like they are going to break up in the middle of the song so they can go get a drug fix.

Well that totally affects your feelings on every single one of these bands then...when I think Nirvana, the Pumpkins, Rush OR Sonic Youth...I don't sense much "fun".

Really? Not every song has to be a joke, but Smells Like Teen Spirit is a fun song, at its core, with a joke right in the title. Territorial Pissings starts with a piss take on the Boomer generation, and has tongue planted firmly in cheek throughout.

Nirvana's music while great, was a continuous angst fest.
SP's was as well, mixed with mild hallucinogens, delusions of grandeur, freak/dork/loser at home on Fri-Satishness (major media consumption), keen social observation from afar, etc....
