my vote is smashing pumpkins, i still listen to the Adore album pretty regular when i'm chilling out.

Smashing Pumpkins in a walk. Nirvana is one smash game changer, three neat little songs. three great covers and a bunch of filler.
nirvana is a historically more important band, imo, but the pumpkins were the better band overall. had kurt not suck-started a shotgun, nirvana might be the clear cut winner, but he did and they aren't. the impact that they had was greater than their music and i think people let that influence their opinion

Kurt was a much better songwriter than corgan.

It's really just Kurt/Dave vs. Billy/Jimmy...everyone else was just there to play live and make the sound fuller. It's also hard to compare these two sets of people because of how Dave Grohl's career turned out.

Disagree with both statements. I would say that Billy is a better songwriter and that Nirvana had slightly better musicians.
Billy vs. Kurt Songwriting: Both wrote some great catchy songs, but Billy seperates himself since he could write songs like Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Zero and Cherub Rock. Each song is totally different. Billy also wrote some great epic songs that are eight minutes plus. A lot of Nirvana songs start to sound the same.
Billy vs. Kurt Guitar Playing: I think this is a wash.
Dave Groel vs. Jimmy Chamberlain: I think this is a wash too.
Kris Novolselic vs. D'Arcy: Big time edge to Kris. D'Arcy was mostly there for image and was not a very good bassist.

Take away loving Gish and this is how I felt. Pumpkins were a decent band with a meglomaniacal frontman with an exaggerated sense of his own talent. Pumpkins also wouldn't have sounded too far removed from the mainstream in the 80s -- they were nowhere near the game changer Nirvana was.
And Mellon Collie is one the biggest piles of dreck ever put to plastic. It's what Yes would sound like if they sucked and were somehow more pretentious.
Comparing Nirvana to Vanilla Ice doesn't even make sense. Ice was wannabe who latched on to a popular movement and made it palatable for suburban white kids. Say what you will about Cobain, but he was at the forefront of postpunk and his band wasn't exactly designed for crossover success. It was accidental, as Nirvana was a pretty rough sounding band -- even more so in the mix on In Utero (intentionally).

I agree with this as Billy has often said he never tried to shy away from his heavy metal and new wave roots. He is a big fan of Led Zeppelin, Queen, Yes, Joy Division, Depeche Mode and Cheap Trick, which all come through in his music.

I'm not focusing on the people. I'm trying to explain what it is about the sound I don't like. Billy Corgan is not all that talented, and even positive reviews of Mellon Collie focus on how self-indulgent the album is. It's remarkably pretentious and indulgent, two things I don't like in music. It's musical masturbation. Maybe Billy's a real nice guy, I don't know him. This isn't "who I'd like to have a beer with" because I doubt I'd want to hang out with the bipolar suicidal dude either.
Pumpkins albums sound like a guy trying out all of these neat ideas, and not committing to any one of them.
I don't like Rush either, and by all accounts they are the nicest dudes in the world. I still think their albums are musical wankfests in which they try and show off their musicianship instead of craft a decent song. It is also an album that sounds like a paeon to their own egos. Yet I think I would like to have a beer with Geddy Lee.

I actually agree with most of this and is why I like the Smashing Pumpkins. I like the fact they are willing to try new things and make it bigger than ever. I will disagree and say that Billy is very talented.
