I appreciate that he gives zero fricks about what people think about his music. He has had some flops in his career and has tried things that, well, just didn't work. But the fact that he's never been afraid to try something new in such a banal industry is pretty cool.

Here's a few album sales figures for Neil Young according to Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time:
After The Goldrush - 2.5 Million
Harvest - 4.3 Million
Tonights The Night - under 500,000
Rust Never Sleeps - 1 Million+
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - 2.4 Million

Interesting facts. I didn't know he sold that many records.
To answer the original question, his guitar work is his most redeeming quality imo. In a close second would be his song writing.

album sales made me curious, scanning...
1- 4X platinum, Harvest
2- 2X platinum, After The Gold Rush & Harvest Moon
1- platinum, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
9- gold
not a bad batting avg for 33 studio albums, that doesn't count Buffalo Springfield or CSNY either

His passion for music..... or money.

His love for his children. Have you heard of the benefit shows hw puts on fro the Bridge School? And he has a bad model train set up for his son Ben as well.

The fact that he can take an instrument that I absolutely despise - the harmonica - and make it work for me. He's the only one that can allow me to tolerate harmonica.
I also loved his version of Long May You Run during the closing ceremonies of the past winter olympics.
...and he likes Sharks hockey.

Anyone who can say or sing the phrase "Johnny Rotten" and make it sound good has a very redeeming quality. Does that answer your question? Oh, that's right, you didn't ask a question.

Great songwriter, adventurous and innovative musician, great dad, and generally all around cool guy.
PLUS, he's a great live performer. Saw him with Crazy Horse years ago and they rocked the roof off of the arena.
Saw him completely solo with guitar, harmonica, piano and pipe organ at the Saenger. Fantastic evening.
Then a couple or so years ago at JazzFest with the entire band. Just played hit after hit and blew the place away.

I like a lot of his music over the years, but can't argue too hard with the son:
