I knew it was a remake, but friends of mine didn't: the Johnny Rivers hit Slow Dancing was originally recorded the year before by the Funky Kings. I have a version later re-recorded by Jack Tempchin.

Basically every 60s and 70s rock song done by a white guy was originally recorded by an African American in the late 50s/early 60s.
