Music, Guitars, Kids, and TV Shows. BC Rich Related..

My son is a stranger things fan. I have discussed him and guitars here before. I have 2 nice starter guitars that I have made playable enough that I enjoy them.
Today he hits me up that he wants a BC Rich Warlock. Apparently some folks out there are foolish enough to buy a limited edition Warlock like the character in the show plays. "But dad, there's only 2000 made!!!"
This makes the guitar in the $2500-3000 range. I explain that that is absurd. Also, explain that if I were foolish enough to buy it and it ended up like his other 2 I would have a BC Rich that I would not want. Also tried to explain that BC Rich are very style specific to Metal. Which he is not a fan, except for Master of Puppets used in the show. I also try to explain that Master of Puppets isn't very starter friendly song.
He answers "you played it the other night." I TRIED it and it was as awful as you should imagine. But was fun and recognizable..... Sort of.
With an Agile LP style with Slash PUPs can I replicate a BC Rich with a modelling amp? LOOSELY replicate.
Also, BS Warlocks range from $300 to $6000 apparently. Whats the deal with that range? BC Rich is not Fender or Gibson. They were not around in 1959. So no vintage Holy Grail BC out there. Just a chasm of difference in materials and components?
TLDR... I have my own issues with GAS. I don't need this with my kid.
IB4 You're an idiot for buying your kid a 3K guitar. That won't happen.

I can't say much.
I currently have a Martin D35 that is worth loosely around $2500, a Martin D18 Custom Shop worth around $3000, a Partcaster worth about $700, and an Eastman worth about $1000.
That's a lot of money tied up in guitars, I like trading, selling, and buying though, kind of my hobby.

You can always find used Warlocks for fairly cheap. Some suck, some don't. What I would do is secretly buy a used warlock in the $400-500 range. Play around with it, and then decide if you think it could use some upgrades. Odds are, if it looks like the one from the tv show, your kid won't know the difference until he can afford to sup it up himself.

Get an NJ model if you must. They're $900.
LINK
I see now - sold out if you didn't get in on it at the jump. It's the market pushing it up with the popularity of the show... not the value of the actual guitar.

If you haven't found the holy grail guitars made during the actual Bernie Rico days, you need to do more research. Guitars Bernie and his team of absolutely expert luthiers were making in the REAL BC Rich factory in their heyday, in the 70s into the early 80s, are consistently as good of guitars as any McCarty-era Gibsons. Absolutely, unequivocally and zero doubt among anyone who truly knows guitars and luthiery.
The reason you see so much variance in BC Rich pricing in general is because they have had different owners, different countries of manufacture, different target price points and different degrees of quality.
If you want to get the best value in a BC Rich - get a neckthru, ebony board, figured maple veneer top ST series that was made by the WMIC factory (Made in Korea). Here's my old Mockingbird ST. This guitar was off the charts in every category in which you can grade a guitar, and I stole it during a GC inventory liquidation blowout for $399.
If you want to get a REAL Warlock that will without question hold its value, collectability and desirability over time, this is my old one ... someone is selling on Reverb ... 1982 Warlock USA on Reverb
Trivia moment:
Did you guys know Bernie started out making Martin clones that were better than the actual Martins at the time?

And if you really want to get savvy and truly Hetfield him ... Master of Puppets was recorded with a 1984 Gibson Explorer. The Explorer era where the knobs were not in a straight line and the toggle was by the knobs, not on the treble cutaway horn.

I had a creamy pink BC Rich Warlock I bought for $350 at Live Music circa ‘91. That thing was heavy as hell! My brother had a white Warlock electric guitar. Good times.

I would not think of a Warlock as a Metallica guitar. That is a Poison or other hair metal guitar.
Agree with other poster on the Made in Korea BC Riches. They are pretty good quality. I had a MIK Mockingbird Bass and it was solid, great fit and finish, and sounded pretty good. I just realized the ergonomics for those things just weren't for me at all. I have since realized Fender style basses are what work for me. Ergonomics should always be considered or there is a risk of a guitar gathering dust.
I had this ST Bass:
They do look very cool though!

Thanks for the lesson Fret. Did not know they had a golden era builder, but I know nothing of BC Rich. And am too old to pick up Metal.
And the Master of Puppets lineage of a Gibson Explorer and James Hetfield would be lost on Lil' Alum. Its all about Stranger Things for him. He now wants to get a "cheap" one. About $500 bucks.
Then he and I can make it look like the Stranger Things guitar. I built one acoustic guitar, so I must be able to sand, refinish, and clear coat a limited edition replica.
Any PUPs to avoid in their lineup? All I see are BC pickups and Fishman Fluence PUPs. I know Fishman are awesome products. And with that statement I have exhausted my knowledge of Warlock electronic options.

Mr Whitford with a Mockingford. Always dug these more than Warlock. Has some Alembic vibes

That is actually a BC Rich Eagle.

With a $500 budget, you will have to take what you get pickup wise. BC Rich has never made pickups. Anything stamped with their logo is Asian aftermarket ghost-build pickups.
