Went back and listened to peak GM from the late 80's and it holds up, especially when juxtaposed against the era. Freedom, Father Figure and Faith are still kind of awesome.

Then you go to some stuff like Kissing a Fool where he did a piano bar style thing.

It's good stuff.

I don't post here much but was wondering about the MB with regards to this.

I was always impressed that he wrote and recorded Carless Whisper at such a young age, 18 or so I believe. Now, I'm not sure who the producer was on that track but the playing was stellar on it and the song was a damned sight better than the crap radio was playing in the early to mid 80's.

A talented vocalist without a doubt who possessed plenty of range and a blues background.

Who down votes that? I mean, I don't mind the down vote, but at least weigh in with your thoughts on why I'm wrong so I can pick your limited musical knowledge to pieces.

Faith was one of the greatest albums of the entire 1980s.

I sometimes think guys like him are overlooked because they are good looking.

If he has a face like Seal, he probably has all sorts of accolades.

One of the best male voices in the modern era, in my opinion. My wife and I saw him live several years ago and he was pitch perfect with every song he sang.

The Faith album is just great. One More Try is superb.

It would be tough for me to dislike that stuff more than I do.

Faith is probably the perfect encapsulation of the 80s, both positively and negatively. He was a fantastic pop star. I actually prefer Listen Without Prejudice, but it was too big of a break from his past work, and the fans (and his label) didn't follow him there. I think Freedom perfectly straddles the two eras of his music and is his best song. Video ain't bad, either.

All the materials I can find say that he both wrote and performed Father Figure and One More Try. That is just straight up impressive - so much so that I really do wonder if it's true. I have the piano music for One More Try and it involves some crazy chords that the average Joe simply could never write. e.g. in the first verse, he hits an "F7 flat 5 /C flat". This isn't just some a-hole noodling around with power chords. That's some Marvin Hamlisch shite right there.

Loved it too, 'Cowboys & Angels" is a timeless tune, yet wasn't a hit. Praying For Time, etc..got the hype.

Wasn't a big fan of Wham's pop sans smoother slower stuff like 'Careless Whisper' and 'A Different Corner' etc..but loved most everything of GM solo.

Michael was a very talented performer and writer. Not necessarily my favorite style, but he had the goods.
