B&T’s and Happy’s are pretty much the only downtown bars thriving in BR, and both do a ton of live music.

Baton Rouge wasn't much of a hotspot before Covid..
Baton Rouge actually had been getting great shows pre covid. The people who say stuff like this don’t actually go see live music in Baton Rouge. They just complain.

I went see AJJ at Mid City right before the pandemic, but it's not like touring bands were coming here on a large basis compared to some other college towns

Baton Rouge had great shows a few times a month for several years leading up to last March.
ETA: The varsity had lucero on March 4th

Happy’s actually has a lot of indie touring bands play on the patio, believe it or not.

Not exclusively. They had Magnolia Bayou recently. Supposed to host Faster Pussycat and have a few other touring washed up acts coming through. They seem to be fitting a similar niche as lava cantina back in the day.

Define indie touring bands and “a lot”

was in town on Saturday and just heard about The Varsity... that was a bit surprising..
Wait, what's happening to the varsity?

The varsity is no longer doing shows. Only private events and gamedays.

They had one about every other week before Covid. I remember checking out Mishka Shubali one night, and a pop punk band from Arizona another night. They didn’t really advertise these shows much.
Red Stick Social is doing some original bands too.

Another huge problem in Baton Rouge.

Venues expect the bands to do all the work. Unless the Varsity expected a large enough crowd, they wouldn’t even share the event on their Facebook page, and they were the MOST proactive venue in town about promoting their shows!

What the frick. If the chimes really needed to expand why not buy the serranos property that has been a revolving door?

I'm guessing its more do to with them just wanting to get out of the live music business...
