Overrated- Bob fricking Dylan and also Bruce Springsteen

Bob Dylan's voice is like the noise I make when I've eaten too much pulled pork and I'm sitting on the toilet dying.
As for Springsteen, I watched the old "We are the World" video the other day and everything was really nice you had all these really talented singers like Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, and Michael Jackson along with a ton of others. BUt then along comes Springsteen and he just wrecks it with his grungy grumbling voice and then he has a duet with Michael Jackson and it's just so bad holy shite.

Underrated Rush (Alex Lifeson)

So Rush is always hated by Rolling Stone for some reason and they aren't even ranked in the top 100 artists, and then Alex Lifeson is definitely not the 98th best guitarist he is way better. But it confuses me why they have the band ranked so low, but then Neil Peart is the 1 drummer, Geddy Lee is the 4 bassist, and Alex Lifeson is at least ranked.

I hate Rolling Stone.

Underrated - Morrissey/Marr. One of the great songwriting duos in the last 40 years.

Overrated - Kurt Cobain. I realize Nirvana was significant and all that, but he and the band have never really done anything for me. Some of those stupid guitar lists have him near the top too which is laughable.

I love Bob Dylan and find Rush pretty meh, so I guess it all comes down to personal opinion.

Have to disagree. I'm too young to have been around when they came of age, but I'd put him in the category of dick Dale, Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix--guys who changed the way people looked at the way the guitar could be played or could sound.

Now many people would argue--and I'd agree--that he wasn't the most technical players, but that doesn't change the fact that he shifted the landscape of popular music.

Mentioning Cobain in the same sentence as Hendrix, as far as guitar playing goes, it's the most blasphemous thing I've ever read.

What the frick!?

Cobain was not a good guitarist, at all. I'm not being subjective, this is factual. He was influential in a huge way, had songs with so much angst and was a voice for a lot of people, but he was never a good guitar player.

Overrated: Joan Jett
She's cool and everything, but not much of a career to speak of. She's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Underrated: The Kinks
Should be mentioned with the Beatles and Stones. Most people only know Lola and You Really Got Me.

I need you to elaborate on this. There were other groups around that time that were pushing the "grunge" guitar sound just as much as Nirvana was. What was so unique about Cobain's playing?

I think as a musician he was respectable, but in no way did he make any significant contributions to guitar playing. Certainly not in the same way EVH or Hendrix had.

ETA: Underrated guitarist/group from that era - J Mascis and Dinosaur fricking Jr.

I have never heard anyone say that he is a phenomenal musician or vocalist.

What he is an elite songwriter and lyricist who is deserving of all praise he receives and then some.

I think you're mixing up concepts. Cobain's influence was on how songs were constructed and he was a weak player - ergo, his songs deemphasized virtuosity on the instrument. That's brilliant - Johnny Cash brilliant - they invented a sound, at a slower tempo because he and his band couldn't play fast. Same thing with Cobain - cranking up the distortion to cover your deficiencies as a player wasn't new - punk bands did it long before then.

But, Cobain did not alter the way folks thought about the guitar, necessarily, as did folks like Scotty, Jimi, Page, Keith, Duane, EVH, SRV, Knopfler, Lindsey Buckingham, Brian May - those cats had a unique, distinctive sound that informed most who came after them and many tried to emulate.

Cobain didn't have nearly that influence on the instrument - if anything his influence is in tone, structure and lyrical content.

As much as I like Nirvana they did not start grunge and Cobain is not and should not be put with the likes of Hendrix and Cash.

You mean the devolving of even being a decent player? Cobain was at the level of a guitar student that had been taking lessons for less than a year.

I think you have to consider that people are appreciated for different reasons.
Nobody ever claims that Dylan is a great singer, but there are some things he does that nobody else should even try to do. As a songwriter,he is untouchable, good guitar player too. He's been a household name for 50+ years.

Springsteen,great songwriter and showman,good musician.
If you are into great harmonies and vocals(I suspect that is your interest),these guys aren't going to be your thing.
Aren't you glad people like different things?
