I just don't think isaac brock would say REM was an influence on his music at all.

They took a heady picture together. That settles it. R.E.M. was a major influence on Isaac Brock.

If you can't hear the guitar influence then I don't know what to tell you. That, coupled with the fact that the bands have played multiple gigs together signifies that R.E.M. did indeed influence Modest Mouse along with nearly every other indie rock band that emerged from the mid-eighties and beyond.

agree to disagree, but since we're on the subject R.E.M. - Swan Swan H (Live at "Lucy Cobb Chapel", Athens, GA, USA, 1986)
have you watched the documentary Athens, GA Inside/Out? full movie

I saw Mouse open for REM once....I guess they got no respect for em.

No one is saying Brock doesn't respect or admire R.E.M. or that he wasn't inspired by them to make music.
Just that the musical influence isn't as obvious as Heady is leading on.

Sounds like an indie rock tier system is imminent

It will probably have more truth than the jam one

No way. Like Burt said earlier, indie is such an umbrella term for a wide variety of music that it would be tough to get a definitive list.
Jam bands are simplified compared to indie. Most people agree that the Grateful Dead is #1, WSPSUX, etc..

since when is jam band opinion considered truth? let the vets make that judgment n00b.

working on it. who else is tier one besides radiohead, arcade fire, and modest mouse? The killers and arctic monkeys could make it in perhaps?
