Did you go out anywhere on the Eastern Shore this weekend?

Nah, went to the reception at my friend's bay house in Point Clear then back to the Grand. Twas a very white-people affair.

I like R.E.M.

You should know better than to humor Burt on things like this.

I mean, it's good for fagrock. They have some good music I can appreciate, but don't try and put them in the same league as modest mouse or modern indie rock; that's an insult. In my opinion, the pixies, sonic youth, and dinosaur jr. were much more analogous to modest mouse's style. just my opinion

I've heard a couple tracks from it. Sounds like David Byrne meets Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Need to give the whole album a listen.

R.E.M. was the predecessor for all of those bands. Their sound isn't as heavy as the others but they were key in having national success despite being on an independent label (and having pride in that fact).

eta: and despite the sound not being as heavy, Peter Buck's jangle guitar can be heard in Modest Mouse

yea i haven't given it much a good listen to yet, but I liked what I've heard. He sounds exactly like David Byrne on "Habit". Like exactly.

according to wikipedia, yes. I just don't think isaac brock would say REM was an influence on his music at all. His influences were the meat puppets, the pixies, butthole surfers, and early pavement (probably some other Seattle music mixed in there). The lines between the sub genres of: indie rock, college rock, new wave, punk, post punk, alternative rock, experimental, noise rock, indie folk, indie pop, britpop, grunge, punk revival, and synthpop can be quite blurry in the time span between the 80s-present day. I just think modest mouse set the blueprint for mainstream indie rock as we know it today.

I'm sure one could also make an argument that lou reed and the velvet underground were the original indie rock band instead of the smiths.
