Just stick with this. Metal genre discussions can quickly descend into stupidity with all the sub genres within sub genres. Unless you've been into the scene for a long time, you're probably better off not delving too deep.

I disagree about not delving further, but I do agree that the endless granulation of metal subgenres is a little silly.

Do you like Black Sabbath? Do you want kick-arse riffs and super-heavy, face-melting guitars? Doom and stoner metal are your ticket.

Do you like Metallica's more melody-driven songs? Do you want metal that prizes technicality and bombast? Power or symphonic metal might be worth checking out.

Do you like Metallica's heavier stuff? Do you sometimes wish they would quit with the singing and noodling around and get back to kicking fricking arse? Any subgenre whose name contains any combination of the words "death," "extreme," or "thrash" will probably work for you.

Do you agree that Mastodon did not become interesting until Leviathan? You will enjoy progressive metal.

Do you just want to listen to hateful people shriek unintelligibly about how hateful life is? Black metal is probably right up your alley.

Are you mentally ill, or would you like to become so? Goregrind is for you, you sick frick.

Grunge, hardcore, and shoegaze aren't metal.

But all three definitely dip their toes into the vat of METAL

I grew up during those years that most consider to be the birth of heavy metal -the 70's and early 80's
I also grew up in a classical music home so I attended the symphony every month.
It was there that I realized that "heavy" music wasn't invented in my generation but actually hundreds of years ago.
The difference is that today we have a new invention called "electricity" which can take that heavy music to ear bleeding levels never imagined by Beethoven and Brahms
This guy explains pretty well

Just wanted to let everybody know that 90% of modern metal absolutely sucks. If you had a classroom of all musical genres and types , then metal would be the special ed kids with the learning disabilities. Fake angry, fashionably rebellious and survives on angst energy rather than musicianship. And most of the lyrics sound like a kid trying to talk with a mouthful of oatmeal. I could go on more about this crap, but I have to get to church and hear some more confessions.

Most of the metal I listen to is more mainstream: Megadeth, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Black Label Society, etc.

If this is your jam, I would recommend Bullet for my Valentine’s album The Poison. If you like that album a lot, I can recommend you a whole bunch of stuff in a similar vein. If you don’t, I can send you in an entirely different direction.
