I have insane love for both. The two bands are nothing alike. You can't even compare them to each other.

I would go with this. If we're limiting it to Anselmo era Pantera, their worst stuff is better than Down's worst stuff. Those first two Down albums are classics but Over the Under is just ok and the eps aren't very good. Compare that to Pantera's worst, Reinventing the Steel is way better than any of the later Down stuff.

Pantera has the way better catalog but Nola is the best album between the two bands imo

Die hard fan of both. Been to nine Pantera shows and three Down shows. Saw Pantera's last show. Down at the Varsity two years ago was unreal. My wife was in Downs Facebook post the next day. I dyed my goatee red when Dime got killed. Pantera's music will hold up till the end of time as a top tier groove metal band!

The Nola album from Down is an elite metal album just like Pantera's best.
I'll take Pantera over Down but it's not crazy for someone to say the opposite. Both are/were badass.

I was also at that show but would counter the show at the Fillmore around 3 years ago was even better

Downs sound is normally muddy. The Varsity show sound people earned their money that night! Highs, mids and lows of course were perfect.

Like it or not, Phil-era Pantera was contrived.
DOWN is more true to Phil's style....

I remember getting the NOLA CD when it came out, not knowing anything about it other than it was Phil's side project
Getting to experience an album like that completely cold was a magical experience you don't get to do anymore.

This was my experience as well. I had head COC and Crowbar at the time so the idea of members of those bands teaming with Phil for a new band was exciting. I first heard about it on MTV a few days before NOLA was released. I bought the cd on release day and have been a fan ever since. Have seen them 17 times now going back to 2002.

An almost impossible question but I would go
2. Eyes of the South
3. Bury me in Smoke

Speaking of Eyes of the South, enjoy:

I wish I could have been at that show back then. The Bomb Factory in Dallas is an amazing venue & the best place to see a show in Dallas. That entire show is in YouTube. Amazing. Nice appearance from Vinnie during that song.

Love them both. Music is not a competition of who is better. Different bands with different moods.
