R.I.P.
He lived a lot longer than country music which died back in the 70s.

BTW, I've been to Muskogee, Okla. It's in the middle of nowhere but they have a nice HS. The first floor is underground. I guess it's because of tornadoes.

A sad day, indeed.
And while Hag had been ailing recently, he was giving vibrant performances as recently as last year. I had the good fortune of seeing him in the summer of 2013, and he was still in very fine form.
One of the true greats and one of the most amazingly American lives ever lived.
RIP, Hag.

He was doing what he loved to do till the very end. I saw him in concert just 2 years ago and you would have thought he had at least 10 more years in him. A True legend.

True, but check out Sturgill Simpson or Drive by Truckers/Jason Isbell.

Most people knew he was great, but he was still underrated.
Bands like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles LOVED him.
I never did figure out whether he was Pancho or Lefty, though.

Anyone following in his footsteps today is probably serving life in prison under the 3 strikes, mandatory minimum sentencing laws.

Easily one of the top 5 all time greats and one of the smoothest voices ever.
Sing me back home
Branded man
Daddy Frank
That's the way love goes
Big City
Good heavens at the beer me and my old man drank to those.
RIP Merle, these punks out there today couldn't carry your guitar strap.

"Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes"
You know this old world is full of singers
But just a few are chosen
To tear your heart out when they sing
Imagine life without them
All your, radio heros
Like the outlaw that walks through Jesse's dream
No, there will never be another
Red-headed stranger
A Man in Black and Folsom Prison Blues
The Okie from Muskogee
Or Hello Darling
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes
[Chorus:]
Who's gonna fill their shoes
Who's gonna stand that tall
Who's gonna play the Opry
And the Wabash Cannonball
Who's gonna give their heart and soul
To get to me and you
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes
God bless the boys from Memphis
Blue Suede Shoes and Elvis
Much too soon he left this world in tears
They tore up the Fifties
Old Jerry Lee and Charlie
And old Go Cat Go still echoes through the years
You know the heart of country music
Still beats in Luke the Drifter
You can tell when hew sings I Saw the Light
Old Marty, Hank and Lefty
Why I can feel them right here with me
On this Silver Eagle rolling through the night
[Chorus:]
Who's gonna fill their shoes
Who's gonna stand that tall
Who's gonna play the Opry
And the Wabash Cannonball
Who's gonna give their heart and soul
To get to me and you
Lord I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes
Yes I wonder, who's gonna fill their shoes?..

and sturgill simpson is sorta like the original outlaw country.

Merle was one of the few people in music that really lived the life he sand about. Unlike Johnny Cash(not to denigrate him ...he was great) he actually DID spend time in prison .
I think I'll just sit here and drink....thinking Merle would appreciate that...pass the George Dickel

I remember the old Dickel billboards--one had Haggard in a bath tub

Yeah, he's kind of a cross between Merle and Waylon. Lot of fun to listen to. You should read the interview of him with Merle in the latest Garden and Gun....Merle is still the master and Sturgill readily admits it
