"That's how I got into it with the hippies...I thought they were unqualified to judge America, and I thought they were lookin' down their noses at something that I cherished very much, and it pissed me off. And I thought, 'You sons of bitches, you've never been restricted away from this great, wonderful country, and yet here you are in the streets bitchin' about things, protesting about a war that they didn't know any more about than I did. They weren't over there fightin' that war anymore than I was."

"H is for Haggard" Amen to that. "H" will always be for "Haggard."

Merle over time has been coy about the true meaning of these songs. I personally believe they were more in the Randy Newman "Redneck" vein - poking fun at all sides.

Willie can't be far behind at 82.
Willie smokes a lot of weed. That shite is good for you. How many fifths of Jack do you think Merle drank in his lifetime? Several Olympic sized swimming pools full I'm sure.

It was a fine day for radio listening. XM 59 just went all Merle, which worked well, and I was fortunate to find a good friend to go play up all the Merle a certain bar had on the jukebox.

In 1984, my Dad was playing drums for Loretta Lynn. They were doing tour dates with George Jones, Twitty and Haggard. Haggard and Jones would swap out, while Lynn and Twitty worked together each night. I was still living in north Louisiana and when they came to Little Rock, I decided to drive up, visit my Dad and see Haggard. I had always respected both Loretta and Conway but was blown away by George and Merle.
After arriving I went to the dressing room where all the musicians would congregate and tell stories. Buddy Spiker was working with Loretta at the time and I would sit and listen to him play backstage for hours. At one point I looked around and my Dad had slipped out so I went in search of him.
As I approached the area directly behind the stage I saw my Dad standing in a small group of men. As I approached I could see Dave Thornhill (Loretta's guitar player), Conway, his drummer, Pork Chop and Haggard. I walked up and stood by my Dad as everyone in the group listened to Haggard tell a story. It was some joke about Buck Owens and I only caught the tail end of it. I was speechless, silent and scared to even speak up.
As Merle walked away, I looked at my Dad and said......that was Merle Haggard. He just looked at me with that familiar expression he would give me when I said something stupid, then smiled and walked back to the dressing room. I was crushed, I'd missed my chance to shake the hand of the MAN. Years went by and I never had the opportunity to hear Haggard again. Then about 3 months ago I heard he was coming to Augusta. I quickly called my Dad, got Meet and Greets and made my plans to finally speak to Merle..............
Rest in Peace Mr. Haggard, you taught us all so much about what real American music is and how it should sound and be played.
