I get that some albums grow on people but I don't get how you couldn't like it the first listen and even say that it sucks. This album is a masterpiece.

It's so different with the horns and such it scared me. I'm very open to the music I like but am kinda guarded on the "new country" music that I immediately freaked out. I'm a guy who loves Pantera, Acid Bath, Down, Crowbar, Deftones, Alice In Chains, MachineHead, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Hank 3, Mastodon, Baroness and tons of other bands

3 or 4th listen I was on board but appearenlty my musical taste and knowledge is up to par with the MB. No shite I'm a huge music fan but I have learned so much from this board its ridiculous. I have found Sturgill Simpson and All them Witches from his Board and that's enough to keep me coming back.

Just listen to what you like buddy.

I do but really missed the boat on the new Sturgill album.

It takes a little bit for deep stuff to get you sometimes. Getting what it really means.
Obviously, to give more than that first listen, you decided to look from other peoples point of view.
You are an open minded person. ( hopefully not too damn open minded )

I'm not gonna suck Dick or listen to Flordia Georgia so I think I'm okay.

If someone were going in thinking it was Hightop/Metamodern style, i could see where it would be a shock. Like thinking you're taking a sip of water and it turns out to be vodka. Hurts at first, but just keep sippin' that vodka and pretty soon....

I still haven't listened to it... I didn't really care for the song he did for Vinyl... However, the main reason is, I haven't been able to find it on vinyl in the few places Ive looked..
I am going to see him next weekend in Milwaukee..

Catching him in Nola at Saenger in September and Ryman in Nashville in October. Can't wait.

I will admit I did not particularly care for it either.

I finally pulled the trigger and listened to some of this guy's songs. Fantastic stuff. He will become a legendary artist. No doubt in my mind. Unique, soulful sound.

I'm a huge Sturgill fan and have been since "High Top Mountain" and I dont care for the new album. It's not the Sturgill Simpson sound that made me stop in awe. I love the gritty 70s country sound and this sure as shite ain't it.

I wanted to throw in that I do still listen to the album but I have to mix the songs up with a rotation of songs from his other albums

I'm glad it's not like his other two. The guy made a record he wanted to make, for his family. And he knocked it out of the park. Absolute masterpiece. I have so much respect for him to even do what he did; debut release on a major label and goes with a concept record way different from what made him popular. All 3 of his albums are A+ to me

I saw him last night in Milwaukee.. He had an 8 pc. band and played for 2 hours... First half of the show was songs from his first two records... Then he played the new one straight through (so I was told - finally got to buy the vinyl at the show)
He also did a cover of When the Levee Breaks
It was outstanding.. The sound was great!

Most folks here don't realize that this album was one he wrote for his son and also to avoid having to follow up Metamodern. He wanted to do an album for himself and his new family. There will be a reversion to the mean IMO on subsequent albums.
For those that were seeking something more akin to Metamodern, seek out albums produced by Dave Cobb. He might as well have a patent on modern outlaw, classic modern country sound.

don't feel bad. His music as a whole is pretty bland.
