Lynyrd Skynyrd... Almost a tribute band

Let me start off by saying that I have been a HUGE Skynyrd fan since I was in 7th grade (I’m 30 by the way, Mom and sister turned me on to them), so I don’t mean this thread to be a knock against them, just an observation.
At this point in time (actually for a good while now) Skynyrd has had only one original member performing in the band, guitarist Gary Rossington. He’s actually the only founding member still living. Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant have been with the band for many years but neither are original members (although Medlocke played with Skynyrd briefly in one of their early incarnations).
My thing is, with only one original member left, why continue to tour as “Lynyrd Skynyrd”?? I get money is obviously the prime motivator, but is the band really anything other than a glorified tribute band? Some of you may not care how many original members are left in a band, but to me, if you keep using the band name and profiting from it, there should be more than just one guy from the original lineup. Also, most fans probably don’t even know who most of the people in the current band are anyway.
Some would argue that Skynyrd died when Ronnie Van Zant died. Maybe laying the band to rest all those years ago might have been better for their overall legacy.

it is what it is. they obviously enjoy playing good southern rock from the old days.

I mean, on the one hand, I get they’re trying to keep the name alive for a new generation of fans and keep playing music from the good times, I truly get that.
I guess I’m just a stickler for bands that still have the majority of their original members while keeping the band name. Obviously, with Skynyrd being initially formed almost 50 years ago, it shouldn’t be shocking that they’ve lost members to natural causes. Skynyrd’s case is extraordinary though because of the plane crash.
To me, it would have been better if the surviving members had rebranded themselves, and laid the original name to rest

How many bands that have been around as long as they have still have all original members? Should a band be forced to breakup or change its name when an original member leaves? Johnny's been in the band much longer than Ronnie was. Why is he not considered the voice of Skynyrd?

i was actually coming here specifically to post something similar.
i was asked “do you want to go to the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert?”
my immediate reply was “has time travel been invented?”
sorry, to me this isn’t Lynyrd Skynyrd anymore.
i don’t know at what point you cease to be that band any more, but they have definitely passed that point.

True, Johnny has been in the band longer than Ronnie... but Ronnie’s voice was the voice of all the classic Skynyrd songs. His song-writing is the stamp on all the songs that made Lynyrd Skynyrd famous. Not trying to take away from the other members, it was a BAND after all, but no one can argue that Ronnie was the glue that brought it all together.
Johnny is a great singer in his own right and I’ve enjoyed a lot of songs that he has done with Skynyrd. But to say he’s the voice of Skynyrd just because he’s been the lead singer the past 30 years, I don’t agree. No one can ever truly replace Ronnie in that role.

because i’d bet 90% of people cannot name more than 1-2 songs written and released by Johnny as lead singer.
so every album they own is with Ronnie singing.

Ultimately- who cares?
Why be a “stickler” about it other than wanting to complain? Either you like them or don’t. That members past and present all seem fine, why wouldn’t I be?

What songs did he originally sing to further the popularity of the band? At least Brian Johnson and Sammy Hagar can somewhat claim that.

It wasn't like one day they woke up and everyone was dead. Why not tour as LS?
Ronnie will always be THE voice for LS and even Johnny will tell you that but Ronnie is dead.....if you don't like the band any longer don't listen.

A lot of bands only have 1 or 2 original members.

Money obviously.....but it goes to show that people still love Skynyrd

Most people want to see the members of the band play that were in them at the height of their popularity and creating music they like. It's not really the same going see Mike Love pretend the guys he's playing with is The Beach Boys or The Doors playing without Jim Morrison. I like how Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl moved on from their initial bands and created their own thing. It is what it is, I'm going to this concert but it's hard to consider them Lynyrd Skynyrd.

horseshite.....these guys were still young and wanted to play. Yes it's how they make a living but they wanted to play and should have used the LS name.

In my opinion, those guys knew the original members a lot better than any of us ever did and the family still allows it so what’s the big deal. I see no problem with it whatsoever, they still carry on the legacy of the old music while continuing to make new music.
No one cares that Artimus and Steve weren’t original members. Plus, if Ronnie were still here, everyone would be ok with him continuing the band, it’s just as much Gary’s as it was Ronnie’s.
We are just “fans”, Johnny, Gary, and Rickey lived that life so let them continue.

This happens a lot. The most egregious that I can think of is with Foreigner. Mick Jones is the only remaining original member, and his contract even states that he doesn't even have to perform at every show. I guess casinos don't care, though.

I seem to remember reading at one time there was an agreement that once there were fewer than a certain number of the original members left, the band's name would be retired. Hell, wasn't the farewell tour supposed to end this past Labor Day weekend here in Atlanta? I guess money really does talk.

There was a legal agreement between surviving band members at the time, and the spouses of those that died that the name Lynyrd Skynyrd could only be used if the band had at least three original members. The have been numerous lawsuits over this in recent years.

maybe not.
Axl continuing to call himself “Guns n Roses” without the rest of the classic lineup was widely criticized.

Chinese Democracy is a great album.
If Skynyrd wants to keep playing, I don't see what the issue is. Are they going to quit and get 9-5 desk jobs? No, they're musicians, they'll play until they can't anymore. If the fans still come out to see them, more power to them.
