not knocking the album.

i’m saying using the name Guns N’ Roses is what was criticized. Instead of giving what is essentially an entirely new band a new name.

If Skynyrd wants to keep playing, I don't see what the issue is. Are they going to quit and get 9-5 desk jobs? No, they're musicians, they'll play until they can't anymore. If the fans still come out to see them, more power to them.

i don’t think anyone has any issues with them still playing. or even playing together.
hell most don’t have a problem with them playing songs by the classic Skynyrd lineup.

the issue is still using the name and trying to pass themselves off as the original band, which they are not.

i think if the had a Skynyrd influenced name and marketed as a tribute band, no one would complain.

These are 2 separate issues and the band has never implied "hey we're original". Pretty much everyone knows that Gary is the only original left.

Didn't say you were; I was just saying it's a good album.

But they aren't passing themselves off as the original band. Same name, sure, but everyone knows the history of the band. A ton of bands have changed or lost members over the years. Is Journey still Journey with Arnel Pineda singing? He's like singer number 5 or 6. They've had a bunch of band members come and go. Steve Perry wasn't even the original singer. How many original members are still in Toto? Deep Purple. Kansas. The list is long.

yes they are:

LynyrdSkynyrd.com

quote:

The Southern Rockers are best known for the RIAA Platinum-certified “Sweet Home Alabama” and self-proclaimed signature song, “Free Bird,” that Rolling Stone said was “easily the most requested live song in existence.” With more than 30 million units sold over their career, the band, that USA Today called the “whiskey-soaked genre's most popular and influential crew,” has become a cultural icon that has spanned five decades. With everlasting hits such as “Simple Man,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “What’s Your Name,” “Call Me The Breeze,” “You Got that Right,” and more, Rolling Stone named Lynyrd Skynyrd one of its 100 Greatest Bands of All Time.

straight from their own website promoting this tour.
literally describes the classic band that ceases to exist on Oct 20, 1977.

even includes the phrase “spans 5 decades” which is absolutely not possible unless you count the original lineup’s time.

In my opinion, those guys knew the original members a lot better than any of us ever did and the family still allows it so what’s the big deal. I see no problem with it whatsoever, they still carry on the legacy of the old music while continuing to make new music.

Exactly. The alternative is a great band's music dies forever, at least live, if an original member leaves. If new people come in and continue the band's legacy at a high level and can continue to bring the music to people I'm all for it.

NIN is Trent Reznor. He takes different people on the road with him for his touring band. Should he not be allowed to use the NIN name because there's a different guy playing keyboards on this year's tour from last year's? Megadeth and several other bands are the same way, essentially glorified solo projects. Axl owns the GNR name. He can tour with whoever he wants.

Did they have you fooled? Did you think that all original members were still in the band? You should ask for a refund on your ticket then. The band has spanned five decades, with a whole bunch of members, past and present, dead and alive. If you think they're a "tribute" band or a shadow of their former selves or something, don't listen to them, don't support them, etc. Even if you're the biggest fan in the world, they owe you nothing.

Here are the only opinions that matter, and was published last year after the death of Buddy Powell.

"Larkin Collins, father of original guitarist Allen Collins, has control of the Lynyrd Skynyrd name along with Rossington, and Judy Van Zant Jenness, widow of original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. He said he expects a decision in three or four weeks.

“I can’t say it’s over,” he said. “It depends on Gary. As far as I’m concerned, if Gary wants to stay out on that stage, then we’ll try to help him.”

wow dude, you seem to have a bigger problem with my opinion than i do with the band name.

it doesn’t bother me to any point beyond simply discussing it when the subject comes up.

that’s it.
nothing more serious than that.

i’m not gonna sue them. not gonna boycott them. not gonna burn their records in my back yard.

Not my intent to come across that way, you're entitled to your opinion. Hell, I'm not even a Skynyrd fan.

But, the point is, why do you have a problem with the band name? It's their blood, sweat and tears that have gone into it for decades. Seems a tad disrespectful to the band to make the claim that their thing, their family, isn't what they say it is.
What other bands that have survived and are still playing do you think don't deserve to use their own name? I mentioned Journey, Toto, Deep Purple and Kansas earlier. What about Black Sabbath when Tony Iommi was running through singers every other week? Iron Maiden. Jethro Tull. King Crimson. Chicago. The Eagles. The Who. Like I said, the list is long. If you're a fan, enjoy them while they're still here.

i truly don’t mean it as a disrespectful thing.

and again it’s not a position i’d say i’m very passionate about either. just something that piqued my curiosity when i saw they were coming to New Orleans.

like i stated in an earlier post, i’m not sure at what point a band ceases to be the “same band”.
hell, there may not be a clear cut across the board answer. it may even be different for every group.

Some members are critical to a band's identity, can you image Jimmy Page finding a singer, and a couple of other guys, and touring as Led Zeppelin? No one would call a band without Mick Jagger the Rolling Stones. There is no Who without at least Daltry and Townsend. I would never have paid to see Black Sabbath without OZZY, or Jethro Tull without Ian Anderson, Chicago died with Terry Kath.

I'm glad Jimmy didn't take some randoms out on the road a few years ago when that rumor was going around. Definitely wouldn't be deserving of the Zeppelin name. Agree with you on the Stones and The Who. Ian Anderson is Tull. Don't know Chicago well enough to speak on it.
The only band I might debate the issue on is Sabbath. Saw the original line-up in '98(?). Dio was awesome in Sabbath and Tony has had a bunch of singers in the band I really liked. Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, and Tony Martin were all good. The Ray Gillen version of The Eternal Idol is fantastic.
Also, I see you are a Prowler guy, so greetings from an old Tomcat guy.
