I love this. Helm is the drummer from The Band.

WIde River to Cross

There's a sorrow in the wind
Blowing down the road I've been
I can hear it cry while shadows steal the sun

But I cannot look back now
I've come too far to turn around
And there's still a race ahead that I must run

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I have stumbled, I have strayed
You can trace the tracks I made
All across the memories my heart recalls
But I'm still a refugee, won't you say a prayer for me?
'Cause sometimes even the strongest soldier falls

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I'm only halfway home, I've gotta journey on
To where I'll find, I'll find the things that I have lost
I've come a long long road but still I've got some miles to go
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross
I've got a wide, a wide river to cross

I read somewhere it was about the death of Stonewall Jackson

A few moments before he died he cried out in his delirium, 'Order A.P. Hill to prepare for action! Pass the infantry to the front rapidly! Tell Major Hawks—' then stopped, leaving the sentence unfinished. Presently a smile of ineffable sweetness spread itself over his pale face, and he said quietly, and with an expression, as if of relief, 'Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees.'[49]

This is kinda off the subject but I still love The Last Waltz. What a fitting and profound way to go out on top. I still believe Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson were by far the most talented members of The Band. Still love their music and I’m a Gen X’er!

Man, I think Dirt Farmer is one of the best resurrection albums of all time. Big Levon fan throughout his career and totally agree that I can watch Last Waltz 100 times this weekend and it never gets old. I will disagree slightly with who the most talented members of The Band were. Levon yes, but I'd put both Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel above Robbie Robertson. And Robbie is a credit-stealing db also.

I think that depends on if you're talking about his ability as a musician or if you're including his songwriting (specifically lyrics) ability. Don't let this FACT

influence your opinion of his musicianship.

You may still be right, I really have no opinion on this, but amongst the musical world Robertson is fairly highly regarded from what I've read. Perhaps, though, that is influenced by his propensity to undeservedly take credit for what others did.

I do love The Band. And I was always perplexed that a Canadian could have written all those songs that sounded like they had so much southern influence. It wasn't until years later I found out that Robertson took credit for things Levon wrote and Levon apparently quietly took that for the sake of the band.

By almost all accounts, Helms was a great person to work with and Robertson was an arrogant, self centered douchebag.

Levon was the best and Danko looks like the most fun to party with.

That video from Festival Express of Rick Danko singing with Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir is hilarious. The shot of him in the beginning of the last waltz playing pool, he looks cool as frick.

. . . and the 'Dirt Framer Band'. I've always liked Levon paired up with Larry Campbell. (*Deep Elem Blues)

On a side: Always chuckle when recallng "The Band' members paid Garth Hudson $10 a week for music lessons... just so his parents wouldn't think he'd failed them (for playing in 'the band).

It’s just an album of cover songs. Like all of Levon’s solo albums.

But we’re supposed to believe he was some prolific songwriting contributor in The Band that got screwed over?

One thing I'm glad I did... Going to see Levon at Red Rocks in 2009 along with John Prine. Huge Levon fan and was the only time I got to see him. I made my way down to 2nd row for the show. Just amazing, especially having John Prine join in on The Weight.

That's awesome. Catches like that are few and far between.
