Shoegaze's influence ruined indie rock. Now we have a whole generation of bands who refuse to rock and think "atmospheric" is a compliment.

Go turn on your AC/DC and yell at your mom. Nobody is hearing that crap here.

I dont think so, most of the great 90s indie rock scene happened after the beginning of the shoegaze movement of the late 80s, early 90s... was simply another sub-genre

Come on man, there's plenty of "yallternative", punk rock, and post-punk bands out there to satisfy your palette. Shoegaze didn't ruin anything.

Whenever I turn on XMU, its another band descended from shoegaze. I liked the genre fine, but is influence has been one that has caused me tune out on a large swath of current music. It's just way too... I don't know. It's too shoegaze. It just can't hold my attention at all, even live.

Maybe XMU is the problem...

Maybe it is. But Pitchfork also seems to promote bands from that subgroup, and most of the indie press follows their lead. So does CMJ and the AV Club. The bands that are getting the push are the descendants of shoegaze.

Well, that sucks for you. B.c its really good music. Just like a lot of genres, there is some crap out there but I truly love the loud psychedelic guitar riffs.

And I love shoegaze bands live.

But of course, I started this thread, so you would expect me to like it.

pitchfork has a tendency to go on streaks with music. A few years ago, every chill wave album was best new music. This year, it appeared to be ambient that got the love.

A lot of the guitar oriented stuff coming out in the last few years is nu-gaze, so one would expect most of the best new music would be nu-gaze.

Wait...I am not really clear on what is "Shoegaze"...I don't have youtube at work.

But...I do know Jesus and Mary Chain. Love them.
And, they rock. So, I don't understand people saying the genre is atmospheric and doesn't rock.

Or is "Shoegaze" music sorta like the updated version of "Goth" from the 80's like Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy, etc?

XMU has been pushed off the first page of my pre-sets for some time.

I wouldnt put JAMC or Galaxie 500 in the shoegaze genre, but see the connection...

This is from wikipedia..

The shoegazing sound is typified by significant use of guitar effects, and indistinguishable vocal melodies that blend into the creative noise of the guitars.

And the term shoegaze came from the fact most of the bands were looking down at the effects pedals during the gigs...

Yeah, that's the best guide. If it sounds like the kind of band that is staring down at their feet, then its shoegaze. It does nothing for me, but it has really become popular and extremely influential. I liked it as a change of pace, but they are the pace setters right now.

I would definitely put JAMC as shoegaze, but not galaxy 500. Although galaxy 500 is one of my favorite bands. That is more like indie rocky folk.

yeah, they definitely use the fuzzed out guitars, but not the "swirling" sound I associate with shoegaze... it doesnt matter... I like it all...

I would say the same about Yo La Tengo as a whole (too varied) , but they def had had their moments in the genre

i would agree but I would also call spaceman 3 shoegaze, even though they also didn't quite fit the mold. Although they used a shite ton of pedals.

Those two bands pretty much defined the genre.

JAMC live was amazing. I saw Spiritualized, Curve and JAMC in NOLA. One of my favorite shows evah. I wish I had taken that microdot that was offered to me.

It would be an insult IMO to call Jesus and Mary Chain Shoegaze.
