re: Let's have a civil discussion about AI music

Oh good Lord.
If I write the lyrics to a song then produce the final version of the song by using AI to add all of the instruments and singers then that's no different than if I hire a band and singers to produce the final version of my song.
If I'm the only person who wrote any of the lyrics to the song then I am the songwriter.
Duh!

Let me write a song right quick. Here are the lyrics:
I saw a sea serpent
Out in the bay
It was hard to see clearly
It was so far away
Some swirls in the water
Just what could it be?
Most likely a porpoise
But it's a serpent to me
Now, I want you to imagine these words set to a jaunty tune - something nautical would be perfect. Add in some syncopated drums, a strummed acoustic guitar, and maybe a piano. Throw in some female backup singers to really flesh it out. The "it's a serpent to me" line can serve as a chorus or refrain - give it a really catchy hook.
My question to you is: am I a songwriter now?
Yes, you are the songwriter of that song because you wrote all of the lyrics.
BTW, my brother's and my February 5, 1985 sighting of a 60+ foot long sea serpent in San Francisco Bay wasn't "so far away".
The sea serpent beached itself directly in front of us only 20 yards away and exposed its entire body except for its tail above the surface of the water.

My guy, no song has actually been written. Just some lyrics. Lyrics don't equal a completed song.

When the lyrics are the only lyrics in a completed song then the person who wrote the lyrics is the songwriter of that song.
If you disagree with that, what do you call the person who wrote all the lyrics to the completed song?

That person is called the lyricist.

Put down the Elmer’s Glue you keep drinking and step away from the keyboard. Review the shitty multi-page threads you post and see how many of the responses are your own. You post a topic with which people disagree and you argue with each person individually ad nauseum. You have zero self-awareness. Please refrain from any future posts.

This exchange reminds me of Breto Ganibe.
"I just sold my first song"
"You have sold me vegetables"
"I just sold my first song"
"You have sold me vegetables"

It sounds like you can't handle anyone who has a different opinion than you.
I have only started a few threads on this board but I don't argue with people who disagree with me. If someone makes a valid point I will agree with them. However, if they make an invalid point I will respond with a valid counterpoint.
BTW, you should let your hair grow longer because the bald head with the little ponytail makes your nose look much bigger than it actually is.

Apparently you are not a songwriter deeprig9 because you used AI to compose your finished song that you wrote all the lyrics to.

This is absolutely correct. If you wrote the lyrics to a song but not the music, then you are the lyricist and I have absolutely no problem with you crediting yourself as such, but you are not the songwriter. The songwriter is whoever (or whatever in this case) wrote the actual music.
I can't believe we are arguing about the definitions of words that can be easily looked up in the dictionary.
Posted on 10/8/26 at 2:24 pm to TheTideMustRoll
According to the Merriam-Webster's dictionary, a songwriter is defined as, "a person who composes words or music or both especially for popular songs".
Posted on 10/8/26 at 3:04 pm to Dawglovertoo
Fine, you win.
If you want to call yourself a "songwriter" because you wrote some words and let a machine write the music for them, go right ahead. Just know that the machine is going to be able to claim the lion's share of the royalty rights.
Posted on 10/8/26 at 4:42 pm to TheTideMustRoll
I win because I'm correct.
You lose because you are incorrect.
I own the rights to all of my songs not AI, however, I am not planning to make any money off of my songs.

That depends on what the definition of is...is.
Posted on 10/8/26 at 5:47 pm to Dawglovertoo
You "win" because I was dumb enough to invoke the dictionary without first checking to make sure it didn't leave a loophole for you to claim that you're correct. My own fault and I acknowledge my stupidity for having done that. I guess all I can say in my own defense is that at least I'm not retarded enough to bring a song I "wrote" by feeding some prompts into an AI to a message board full of actual musicians and claim it makes me a real songwriter. Now that would be embarrassing.
Posted on 10/8/26 at 6:06 pm to TheTideMustRoll
You're wrong again because you were wrong in the first place.
You are being absurd since now you are claiming the actual definition of "songwriter" is a loophole because you don't like what the actual definition of "songwriter" is.

Whatever, man. My favorite part of the thread is when you actually affirmed that I had written a song because I wrote some words and a vague description of what a song using them might sound like.

It's not "Whatever". It's "What is".
You didn't just say you wrote some words. You said you wrote the lyrics to a song. That's why I said you are a songwriter.

That's different than you saying you wrote some words.

Guys! I had a really great idea for a painting! It has a tree in it, or maybe two, and also I think there's, like, a fence or something, and I'm pretty sure there's a mountain in the background. There's lots of blues and greens and browns and also some other colors too. Can y'all believe it? I'm a painter!

You are comparing apples to oranges.
Here's the lyrics my brother wrote to his song called, "Dark Lady".
Walking down that lonesome highway
Going nowhere
But I'm getting there fast.
Took a turn down by the water.
I got there first
And I'm leaving there last.
Black horses on a barren meadow.
White cranes on a mound of mud.
Echoes of your hidden whispers
Turn their backs on the setting sun.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Cold wind blows by the graveyard.
Dark shadows fly beneath the moon.
Two riders met at midnight.
The first came later.
The other came soon.
Bad blood flows in the courtyard.
Passion flowers in a pearly white hand.
Summer breeze blowing over the ocean
Spreading sunshine
All over the land.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Time past became the future.
All things remain the same.
Love bruised another victim.
A wise man leaves
What another man claimed.
Shot down in a moment of glory.
One wins while the other one drowns.
Doors open upon the passage
That enters into
The kingdom of clowns.
Sweet voices appear in the distance.
Soft kisses from a light in the dark.
Love's arrow travels on music.
Despite the fact
That it pierces your heart.
Young lovers who caress in the springtime
Along with those who love in the fall
Know life's one simple message.
A life alone
Is worth nothing at all.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Dark lady gonna take you home
Then I'm gonna show you
Just how much I love you.
Dark lady going to take you home.
Dark lady going to take you home.
He also composed his own music to this song.
However, he used AI to add more instruments than just his guitar..
I think that makes him the songwriter of this song.
