where do they rank in your old school metal catalog?

Solid number 4, maybe 5. Maiden, Metallica, and Sabbath are all better. Motorhead is just behind them. They're about even with Pantera.

As far as old school metal goes, + with their influence has to be a top 5.

Pretty much agree. Their influence was more important than anything. Music was very good, don't get me wrong, but the attitude they brought was what really helped change the metal genre.

Not at the top, but far from the bottom. They're definitely behind bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, but still pretty damn good. Not too many bands can rock as hard as LINK

They're over Pantera in my book, but that's more due to personal tastes and stylistic differences than anything else. I just don't like Pantera's vocals that much.

hard to compare judas with pantera...that's damn near apples to oranges...though I do love them both

Yeah top 5 for me too. Unleashed In The East is my all-time favorite live album.
And speaking of influence, that is very true too. Kerry King stated they are one of his biggest influences and his all-time favorite band.

Don't leave out Krokus and Dokken in those rankings brah!

Rob Halford automatically qualifies them as a top-5 band.
If we're talking about influence, then it's kind of hard to say where they fall. Hell, Diamond Head is more influential than Anthrax, but are we really going to say the former is better overall?
Judas Priest bridged the gap between Black Sabbath and the NWOBHM. They are the missing link between blues-tinged hard rock and the more metallic sound of the classic heavy metal.
I really hate the fact that their material post-Hell Bent for Leather/Killing Machine became more and more simplistic. It's one of the few reasons why Iron Maiden probably holds a higher position among metal fans. Iron Maiden was a thinking man's group (e.g. Samuel Taylor Coleridge homages, literary allusions, historical references, etc.), while Priest was more of a festive act.
Sad Wings of Destiny pushed boundaries and is easily one of the most underrated and musically diverse metal albums of its era, but British Steel almost seemed to "dumb down" their sound. It was too clean cut at times. It's the equivalent of Highway to Hell for metal. Both are classic and cherished albums, but each lacks the rawness and intensity of prior releases. Still, both albums are responsible for bringing their respective creators into the limelight.
Judas Priest's body of work is so expansive that is almost mandatory to place them ahead of acts like Pantera or Slayer, who only have four/five quality albums under their belt.
When you stop and realize that they completely reinvented their sound in 1990 with the release Painkiller, an album which goes toe-to-toe with any non-extreme metal release in terms of heaviness, sonic fury, and speed, it makes them all the more impressive.
Their style and sound is more diverse than Motorhead. And Lemmy, despite being one of the great frontmen of all of music, will never have the stature and respect of the Metal God.
But, they are not as influential as Black Sabbath, not as collectively talented as Iron Maiden, and not as ground-breaking as Metallica. For me, they fit right around 4th place, just behind those other three bands.

Sad Wings of Destiny
That day in 1976 when I opened this album and had my first listen, it was like no other heavy metal I had ever heard. Sabbath had been the high mark and the only music I could compare it too was the Trapeze Medusa album. Man those two Flying Vee's and Halford's wailing vocals are still magic for me.

Point Of Entry is a very underrated album. Wasn't hard enough for many at the time, but it really holds up.
Edited to add: Solar Angels and several other good songs too.

Agree. I actually prefer it over British Steel.

Definitely had some Sabbath influence.

Pretty high, Sad Wings of Destiny could be the greatest metal album of all time.

Favorite band in high school with Point of Entry and Screaming for Vengeance.
Agree with the poster on Desert Plains. Love that song.
I've listened to Sad Wings of Destiny too many times to count.
Dreamer Deceiver is one of my all-time favorites.
