Underrated album? Just listened to the whole thing again for the first time in decades. Brilliant piece of work in my opinion. How does everyone else weigh in?
I like to think of U2 in this era being their prime.

The album was a very big deal.

I was 19 when it was released so no young pup. Yeah, it was huge when it came out. Just seems like U2 gets short shrift some time since Bono became kind of a gasbag. But I would put this album in the top 10 of all time I believe.

That was their watershed album.
By far my favorite of theirs start to finish.

It is the exact opposite of underrated.

The Joshua Tree received critical acclaim, topped the charts in over 20 countries, and became the fastest-selling album in British history. According to Rolling Stone, the album increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars". It produced the hit singles "With or Without You", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Where the Streets Have No Name", the first two of which became the group's only number-one singles in the US. The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. The group supported the record with the Joshua Tree Tour throughout 1987, on which they began to perform in stadiums for the first time in their career.
Frequently listed among the greatest albums of all time, The Joshua Tree is one of the world's best-selling albums, with over 25 million copies sold. U2 commemorated the record's 20th anniversary with a remastered re-release, and its 30th anniversary with a concert tour and reissue. In 2014, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry, having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the US Library of

One of the greatest albums of all time. The sound and feel of that album will never be replicated. It’s one of those albums that transmits you to another place... True masterpiece.
I hope you caught the 30th anniversary tour a couple years ago.

That record kind of changed my life. I was 16 when it came out and I was listening to a lot of Top 40 music. We took a school field trip to Acadiana Mall and I picked up the Joshua Tree cassette. Most of the other people in my class got the Whitesnake album, so I got teased mercilessly about it. Because of The Joshua Tree, I started reading music magazines, getting into other college radio bands like R.E.M. and also getting into classic rock (I think one of the first issues of Rolling Stone I read had one of their many 100 Greatest Album lists)
I saw the 30th Anniversary tour a few years ago when they stopped in the Superdome. It was an amazing show that damn near brought me to tears. And going in I was stressed out and in horrible mood because I spent the whole fricking day arguing with my wife about bullshite.

One of my top 5 all-time. Saw them on the original tour when the album was released--in the PMAC. Then saw them 30 years later in the Dome for the 30th anniversary.
I was already into U2 and loved every preceding album, but this one blew it through the roof.

If Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree would have been released as a double disc in around 1986, music today would not be the same. I think they did make out all right though.

I go between October, War, Un-Fire, Joshua Tree, and yes achtung baby as favorites depending on mood and the seasons. Rattle and Hum as a whole didn’t do much for me but All I Want is You is up there as my favorite tune.

Joshua tree is great but all that you can’t leave behind is just up there with it

I really like Rattle and Hum a lot. The live material on it is stellar. And there are some great deep cuts on the album that really smoke - God Part II, Hawkmoon 269. I know it's easy to make fun of, because it's kind of pretentious - U2 discovering America. But the record is legit.

My favorite was always Under a Blood Red Sky.

You will be hard pressed to find a better first 4 song album than Joshua Tree. Not a filler on there. Silver and Gold should have been on the original cut.
But again...just like GNR and Pumpkins would nail, this could have been a double album because I do not see much difference in the styles of the 2 albums. The production value is clearly better for the Joshua Tree, but man if you put those 2 together, wow. Wow. Wow. Their 2 best. I also think The Unforgettable Fire would have been the better 2nd disc. Hard to not open the entire thing without Where the Streets Have No Name.
