John Cougar - before the denim
For some reason this video from 1981 popped up in my youtube suggested videos - Ain't Even Done With the Night.

Had never seen him like this, and not sure what he was going for.

Looks like someone trying to dance when they're borderline blackout drunk but can still barely maintain their balance

This performance was during the Grammys or AMA telecast. He also paid homage to James Brown when his bandmate kept putting the Cape on him and "trying" to drag him offstage. Cougar was known early on for being comedic, even goofy in his performances. He definitely got more serious as he aged.

There's a cool story about his long time drummer, Kenny Aronoff, on a Netflix doc called "Hired Guns".

If I remember correctly, Aronoff said Mellencamp fired his other drummer because he didn't like how he played Jack and Diane. Aronoff was brought in the studio to audition, and was basically told how you fill the break with the drum solo will determine if you get the job. He played that famed drum fill on his first go and ended up being his drummer for 14 years.

Apparently Mellencamp is a douche though and fired him abruptly after 14 years.

Interesting. I remember hearing that he had shifted personas, but I only ever saw him in the Live Aid, smalltown phase. I get the James Brown tribute, just was surprised by how campy all the dancing stuff was.

I don't know how good of a guy he is. I get the impression he doesn't suffer fools very well. A lot of his band has been with him for many years though, including that chick on the violin who looks like she's about to have a stroke any minute while playing. I do remember reading years ago how one of his band members was arrested on child molestation charges. I don't know if that was the guy he fired you were referring to though.

He had seats in front of me at a Phish show at Deer Creek in like 2011. Cool, huh?

Back when they knew he had talent but couldn't figure out a way to market him. Johnny Cougar, John Cougar

Before that moment he recorded this.
They scrapped this release until after he got famous.

He lives(or used to, not sure if he still does) near some cousins of mine. We ran into him and his wife at a restaurant in Bloomington, IN around 93 or 94. He was pretty approachable and jovial. We were the only ones that talked to him though as I assumed the locals were used to seeing him around town.

I've always heard he's very loyal and protective of his bandmates. I remember when the girl that played the accordian on The Lonesome Jubilee album died in a car accident(I think) he was pretty devastated and paid for her funeral.

Sounds like the same story with The Black Crowes.

Now that I think about it, a guy I worked with about 30 years ago was from Indiana. He told me he was drinking at a bar one night in Bloomington, and Cougar sat next to him and they chewed the fat for a couple hours. He had just blown up at the time, and my co-worker said you wouldn't have any idea he was a rock star if you didn't know who he was.

There is a reason he is credited as Little Bastard when he produced his albums. There are legitimate reasons why he has that nickname and the scale balance between the positive and negative reasons pretty closely. He doesn't take shite and he doesn't give shite. He is not an egomaniac but he is a perfectionist. He is loyal but also very demanding. He doesn't care about your feelings and he doesn't care if you care about his. His politics have changed but nothing else about him has. If Trump had came around in the 80s Cougar would have loved him.

BTW the previous paragraph also does a good job of explaining why every marriage he has lasts about ten years before spontaneously combusting.

This is my favorite Mellencamp song, and I love this version from his MTv Unplugged appearance.

And wow, I was at this concert. Just happened to be in Indiana for a family funeral and cousins had tickets. We were way up in the rafters.

Check It Out
