I had planned to catch Fleetwood Mac yesterday but by 11:30 it was already packed so I spent most of the day at Gentilly and had a good time (Mutemath was great). Moved over to the blues tent for Los Lobos to close out the day and they were tremendous but still would have liked to catch FM.

Yea, the sound quality for keys underwhelmed. Was much like the final four show at woldenberg. Not sure if their sound guy doesn't handle the huge fields well, or something about their style not carrying well on a windy day out there or what... Other bands didnt seem to suffer from whatever ailed them.

Really enjoyed the meter men.... But wasnt as impressed by the addition of McConnell on keys as expected. That's not to say I didnt like it - it just didnt have the wow factor I was thinking it might

texts I'm getting said Keys' sound job was horrible and Hall & Oates were best of the day

I don't really follow Black Keys but was looking forward to seeing them after hearing so many good things. What a disappointment. I don't know who is to blame but the sound was awful and it sucked the energy out of the crowd. I am so glad I got up and went to Hall & Oates. They were freakin awesome!

Watching on AXStv right now... Musically - Hall and Oates still sounds tight - but Daryl Hall's voice is SHOT.

ETA:

as far as ability to hit the high notes. Low and mid-range still OK.

it was amazing. i was walking from near congo back over to Acura between black keys and trombone shorty, and i was far in the back when he started...i could hear him better from the back than i could hear the black keys from my spot up front for them.

But they ended 20min early for some reason

meh, supposed to go off at 5:15... think they ended at like 5:10 after their second encore.

I thought they were good but the jamming out on "I Can't Go for That" last too long. Some of Hall's vocal improvs were strange and out of no where.

Saw Billy Ocean and Elton John in the recent past and they were both easily better than Hall and Oates. I'd give their performance a 6/10

After sitting through half of that disaster over at Acura for The Black Keys, Hall & Oates sounded great.

Sat night at the republic they took a lot more risks and page was more involved throughout. I think he was letting the meters do their thig at jazzfest which I gotta say was the right move.

Also Ivan Neville came and played keys with them for 2 or 3 songs sat night.

understandable. i just figured they would get a little more out of the opportunity. thats not to say i wanted it to turn into a page show though. if erring one way or the other i prefer the understated over him taking over. still a really good set that i enjoyed a lot.

No doubt, George Porter Jr. I think is what new Orleans music and jazz fest is all about.

It was great to see 75% of the meters on stage last day of jazz fest.

I almost did what you did, but stayed at Acura and have zero regrets. Fleetwood put on an incredible show. And I feel like it is an opportunity I won't ever have again.

I can see Phoenix again, Galactic, Mutemath

Page McConnell is certainly one of the greatest keyboardists of all time but there are several reasons he probably didn't take many risks:

1. Like others have mentioned he probably had a ton of respect for the Meters on their home turf

2. Although he takes the occasional solo with Phish, he is usually layering sounds while Trey leads the jam (although interestingly enough it is Page who starts the motif in the 8.17.97 Bathtub Gin, which is widely regarded as one of if not the best jam of all time). He simply isnt used to taking the spotlight.

I don't understand why the black keys sound is never any good. It was the same thing at Hangout Fest 2 years ago.
And yes Shorty killed the closing act. Had the entire Acura crowd jumping up and down. Was great!

Widely regarded by whom? Because I've never heard anyone but a Phish head say this.

Wonder if they are any better indoors? Hearing that they sucked at another festival certainly won't help me give them another chance. I kinda gave them the benefit of the doubt based on how many other people have told me how good they are. Quite frankly they just sucked.
