I don't give a frick about his politics. If I gave a frick about politics of my favorite musicians I'd be giving a lot of fricks. What I give a frick about is him making shitty music. He has become "socially aware" and has decided that his music needs to reflect that. He's forcing it and making shitty music (based on 3/4s of the songs released so far). Hopefully those are the three shittiest songs on the fricking record but I doubt it.

they hate you idiot conservative good ol' boys that come out to their shows and get the message all wrong.

They talk shite about Reagan in "Puttin' People on the Moon." They wrote a song about George Wallace (a racist Democrat) going to hell. They put out another song about the drug dealer in the film "Walking Tall" being the good guy. Though I don't consider these stances to necessarily be "liberal", they aren't "conservative" and they're certainly not easy to "get the message wrong." Which particular songs did your friends in the DBT think "idiot conservatives" got wrong?

And you + a few others in here are way off base. Sorry that a bunch of white people don't particularly want to hear sub-par music talking about how awful white people are. Especially from a bunch of guys that are pretty well off. I'd bet Hood and Cooley are worth close to $1m each, and Isbell is probably worth 5x that. But, yeah, their heavily working class fanbase are the bad guys.

Isbell's new album is horrible. Unlistenable.

For my tastes, 2 of the 4 songs he released before the album was out (Hope the High Road and White Man's World) are the weakest songs on the record after my first listen.

Which songs discuss how awful white people are? You should actually listen.

Anxiety, Tupelo, Molotov, If We Were Vampires

All great songs.

So many triggered nuts in this thread.

Tupelo and Molotov are the only two songs on the album that could even exist on the previous two albums.

This whole album feels forced. He almost seems too happy now and is looking for something to anger him to produce songs like he has in the past.

He set the bar impossibly high and failed to come close in my opinion.

Vampires would fit in perfectly on Southeastern.

Me either.

People are just bitching because he is speaking his mind about sensitive topics that they disagree with.

This album is nowhere near Southeastern and SMTF. A couple decent songs, yeah. But people who think this album is good have got their head in the sand and would have given it a 9/10 no matter what he put out.

Isbell will be making great music for many, many years to come.

This new album stands right there with the last two.

I personally enjoy it more than Something More Than Free. It ain't Southeastern, but not many things are.

If We Were Vampires is still my favorite even though it was released early.
