Yes, but followed closely by Hootie and The Blowfish, then The Dave Mathews Band.

You obviously missed the 120 minutes where they debuted Smells Like Teen Spirit. The following Monday Nirvana sold a zillion copies including me and my roommate: neither of us Knowing the other went to buy it.

Dive is a great song.

They were amazing well before he killed himself and I'll fight you on that

Nirvana is in that rarified air, with bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, where decades after changing the course of music history people look back and claim they are overrated or that they suck.

But after further review and the constant hammering of Nirvana as the torch bearer of that era, i can honestly say they sucked.

Additionally, I love the Foos. Great songs. Grohl is awesome.

Lmfao

I like some of the FF songs, but this statement might be amongst the gayest I’ve seen on this board

You think songs like Lithium, All Apologies, and Come As You Are suck, but will blast some sappy pop shite like My Hero and Learning To Fly?

I was in my early 30s when it Nirvana came into the public eye. They never really stood out to me in any regard.

Most of their die hard fans were teens and early 20s kids.

I was a freshman in college and had grown up on glam hair rock bands. Nirvana ended that genre of music in its tracks. It was kind blowing how teen spirit immediately ended one genre and blew up another one overnight. Predictably I am a nirvana fan.

Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, with maybe STP being #5

Agree, maybe add RHCP.

They were damn near in the "Beatle-mania" atmosphere for a few years prior to his passing.
No, they weren't.

I agree on Nirvana, although I admit it may be timing bias

I don't think Cobain was a particularly talented musician or writer. I don't think the catalog has much depth. I just candidly don't find the band that compelling, even though I liked the music well enough, especially when I was younger.

But the caveat is that I was really young when grunge came on then scene, so by the time I appreciated Nirvana to some extent, it certainly wasn't anything revolutionary. Not that Nirvana led the way on grunge, but if I'd seen it come into its peak perhaps I'd feel differently.

Interestingly, I'm a big Beatles fan, although in my younger year I probably had a similar view of the Beatles. But I do think you can make much stronger arguments for the artistry of the Beatles and obviously there is a lot more content to go off of.

AIC produced songs with meaning. Kurt produced songs with marbles in his mouth.

Remember Weird Al's parody of Teen Spirit?

Ok, you're entitled to your preference in art.

Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl respectively seem to be (arguably) the most over-rated band AND main artist in history.

How the generic, one-trick pony Grohl parlayed his drum-playing notoriety with Nirvana to be considered some kind of (mediocre) guitar-playing Rock "icon" and lineage to past greats has been a mystery up there with the builders of the Great Pyramids.
