I have often brought up the topic to my musician friends, and they are all in accordance with the general sentiment from this board.
Other people haven't a clue who the hell I'm/we're talking about. It is sad, but it is the way it is. Levon's death may bring to light the talent they possesed. It was good to see a little media coverage.
ACADIAN DRIFTWOOD
A soulful, historical masterpiece. You can hear the emotions in Levon's voice, which is a main reason The Band is so loved by the fans.

CCR was only around for a year or two weren't they?
First album - 1968
Last album - 1972
And yes, I agree they are not underrated.
As far as the Band, definitely underrated.

Well, I just thought they were underrated in terms of greatness by some people, but I agree that they are very popular and definitely not underrated in those terms.

I like The Band and agree somewhat about underrated, but to me they don't come close as far as all time because they get plenty of positive press, comments etc.
Top for me would be:
The Connells
Hoodoo Gurus
Guadalcanal Diary
X

What I respect about the Band and particularly Helm, was he sang every single word with absolute conviction from his gut. It was like a guy sitting in his basement by himself with his drums, just playing and singing like nobody was watching.

I have tried to like The Band, I want to like the band but have had a hard time getting into their sound. Instead of just posting they are underrated, can you link some of their better stuff?
Have you seen the last waltz?
eta: never mind. you have.

Part of the problem for The Band, I think, is that for a LONG time in their career they were precisely that, the band. They were Dylan's band and unfortunately that makes it difficult for people to branch out and follow them afterwards.
I for one am a big fan, music from big pink is awesome

The Band is practically revered and Martin Scorcese made a movie about them. How much more rated can you get, really? How many people have you met who have something BAD to say about the Band? They aren't wildly popular, but they are almost universally respected.
Most underrated band? Maybe Idlewild. Completely ignored, no real critical groundswell, and one of the best (and most literate) rock bands of the past decade. They also don't get hipster points, so they are ignored by both the mainstream and the underground.

Wow. Don't think I've ever met another American who has even heard of Idlewild. I got into them around the time of Warnings/Promises and they have been one of my favorite bands since. Roddy Woomble's first solo CD is really good as well.

Thats not true though. They spent more time with Ronny Hawkins as the Hawks than they did with Dylan. They played with him for a year or two in the 60s. Then they recorded 1 fairly average album by Dylans standards in the 70s and did one tour together which a live album was made from. If you read Levons book Dylan really didn't spend very much time with them.

100 Broken Windows is a masterpiece. Sorry, we should probably have an Idlewild thread.

No one who has ever heard The Band thinks they are underrated. Pretty much everyone who knows music agrees.
