Television- Marquee Moon
Probably my favorite solo ever, but Comfortably Numb is great and I wouldn’t fault anyone for choosing it.

This “Comfortably Numb” live performance in England from 2006 is my favorite all time guitar solo. It starts at the 4:30 mark and rips for over 3 minutes. Literally gives me chills.

I’ve always thought the solo in The Unforgiven (Metallica). Was really well done and fit the song great

Agree. the solo in Comfortably Numb is fantastic but IMO, Time is the most perfectly written song ever. The music composition, the lyrics, from the first notes to the end it is flawless.
And the older I get the more it hits home.

"Watermelon in Easter Hay" by Frank Zappa. For those that haven't heard it, check it out. Especially the 9 min. version. It's pretty damn good. It's always been one of my favs.

I don't subscribe to the notion that any musician, song, or solo can be ranked as "the greatest," since most of us enjoy the incredible creativity expressed by a wide variety of musicians, so I'll just mention two of my favorite solos that I know no one else is going to mention...
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Tightrope
Steve Howe - To Be Over

A bunch of great songs in this thread.
I’ll submit that Ted Nugent ripped off a few great ones.
Too many great Metal solos… would be hard to parse out.

I've heard it way too many times at guitar center to where that doesn't count for me. Too much of a used war horse.
No one will say this but:
-Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione is the best "mainstream" solo I've ever heard on guitar. Tone is amazing, and his vocabulary bounces around between post bop jazz, some blues, and classic rock type solo, with a total "smooth jazz" (I hate that term) type tone. The pocket and the technique to get across the ideas is unprecedented. Listen to that shite.
-If we're talking honorable mention:
-the shredder (don't like that shite but whatever) would be Paradise City. Of course Hotel California but it's so overplayed. Smooth by Santana.
-old school blues solo - Freddie King - Five Long Years
-contemporary blues solo... And Derek Trucks has taken the best solo I've ever heard on a 12 bar blues solo but it was from a live show.

Feels so Good is a trumpet solo. It was great but it was a trumpet. Actually it was flugelhorn.
Seeing The Wall when it came out on acid was mind blowing on the big screen.

Not sure how anyone can determine the best guitar solo because it’s too subjective, that said Ritchie Blackmore’s dazzling solo on Lazy from the Machine Head album is pretty solid.

No. There's a guitar solo in the middle.
