I mean the vocals and songwriting are pretty meh. If that's the most important band in the world then the human race has failed.

ANTHONY KIEDIS: They're essentially an indie band that can sell out stadiums.

The greatest indie band ever is REM. They essentially invented "alternative" rock.

Maybe if you're talking American bands, but The Smiths crush everything REM ever did.

I've tried to get into REM for a long time

They're pretty good. I don't really get it I guess.

Congrats on helping to turn this place into phantasy tour. Who gives a frick who thinks who is the most important indie band of all time. Guess what to that person they are. It's not the end of the world I promise.

REM is just okay, and I grew up in the 80's when all my punk skateboarding friends loved them. I always preferred The Smiths.

a few things:

If Morrissey is the answer, you've asked the wrong question. (Though Johnny Marr is awesome)

REM's IRS output takes a gigantic dump on the Smiths. Again, essentially invented a genre

Also, yes, indie means a lot more in America than England. So yes, the best indie band is almost certainly American. You didn't hear american bands acting like the Sex pistols and bitching about how EMI wouldn't distribute their single. DIY is a far more intrinsic part of the American music scene than England's (not that it doesn't exist in England, just not on the same levels)

To the extent England did have an indie scene, particularly the Mad City scene, it is in REM's wake. The Smiths and the like are traversing a path forged by Black Flag and REM.

Finally, I just get irritated the way Americans get overawed by British pop music. Have some pride. Union Jack ain't all that.

That's fine. I don't think anyone has a problem with an opinion you have. It's just when you add in the little bitch factor. That's all i'm saying
